The Hermitage has one of the world’s great
collections of French painting of the early
20th century. This exhibition consisted of
76 works from that collection, covering the
establishment of Modernism overall and,
above all, emphasizing the unfading significance
of those masters who revolutionized
art at the start of the 20th century. Alongside
canvases by the great artists of the French
school – Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Kees
Van Dongen and Maurice de Vlaminck –
were works by their celebrated Russian
contemporaries such as Kazimir Malevich
and Wassily Kandinsky. Nearly all the works
came from the Hermitage’s permanent display
in the Winter Palace. Most of them derived
from the private Moscow collections of
Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov.

to Alexander the Great, his Eastern
campaigns and the influence of Hellenism

2500 years, the exhibition presented objects
