Incuse Staters struck for commerce with the Achaean Cities of<br />

Magna Graecia.<br />

Group A. Circ, B. C. 515-500.<br />

SAflAT (in field to 1.). Taras, naked, hair tied behind, astride on<br />

dolphin to r. ; 1. arm extended, and his r. resting on dolphin's<br />

back ; beneath, traces of cockle-shell; along border below, two<br />

pellets (indicating value, 2 drachmae) : cable border.<br />

tyL. Traces of inscription •••• AS. Same type as obv., 1., with cockle-<br />

shell very plain : border of radiating lines ; all incuse. — Stater.*<br />

Same dies as Paris specimen (Cab. des Med., n° 1215).<br />

Notes. Head, Babelon, Sir Arthur Evans and M. P. Vlasto date the incuse Staters<br />

much earlier (B.C. 560-500) ; however, Arthur Sambon (Revue Ntimismatique, 1 916),<br />

the latest authority who has studied this class of <strong>coins</strong>, prefers the above dating.<br />

* Now in M. Vlasto's <strong>collection</strong>. Vlasto, after comparing this coin with the casts<br />

which he possesses of the 30 known specimens of this type has come to the con-<br />

clusion that it is from the same dies as the Berlin coin and one of his own (found<br />

at Lecce, 1906). He further states :<br />

" La piece <strong>Weber</strong> porte sous le dauphin, pres de<br />

la bordure, deux globules (marque de valeur indiquant qu'a Tarente ces monnaies<br />

valaient 2 drachmes et non pas 3). Ces globules ont ete ajout£s apres un long<br />

usage de ce coin et je ne les ai retrouv^s que sur un seul exemplaire du Cabinet des<br />

M£dailles de Paris, n° 121 5. Je possidais deja dans ma <strong>collection</strong> trois Tarentines<br />

de types divers avec de semblables additions ou retouches faites aux <strong>coins</strong> apres<br />

avoir servi"<br />

SAflAT (in field to 1.). Apollo Hyakinthios, naked, hair in queue<br />

and tied in knot behind, kneeling on 1. knee, r. foot advanced,<br />

holding in r. hand a hyacinth and in 1. a tetrachord chelys : cable<br />

ornamented border.<br />
