Messana, Mamertini
originally Zancle.
An early Chalcidian colony, situated on the Strait of Sicily, and at first
named Zancle from the shape of its harbour (a sickle, £jcy"/.Xcv). Soon

Anaxilas of Rhegium caused Zancle to be seized by
Milesian and Samian fugitives who had left their homes on the collapse
later expelled the Samians, and bringing some
of the Ionian revolt . He
Messenian colonists, changed the town into Messene.
Under the name of Zancle.

jections (the port of Zancle with buildings on the mole (?); around,
border of dots.
