named Zancle from the shape of its harbour (a sickle, £jcy"/.Xcv). Soon<br />

Anaxilas of Rhegium caused Zancle to be seized by<br />

Milesian and Samian fugitives who had left their homes on the collapse<br />

later expelled the Samians, and bringing some<br />

of the Ionian revolt . He<br />

Messenian colonists, changed the town into Messene.<br />
