Catana.<br />

A Chalcidian settlement from Naxos . Hieron,<br />

of Syracuse, expelled its<br />

inhabitants in B. C. 476 to colonize it with Syracusans. After the<br />

death of Thrasybulus the new population was driven out and the former<br />

citizens restored. Hieron changed the name of the city to Aetna, but after<br />

it regained its freedom in B. C . 461 ; it was again called Catana.<br />
