SICILY
DESCRIPTION
Gela.
(terranova)
A colony from Crete and Rhodes. The city stood at the mouth of the river
Gelas, which is represented on nearly all the coins in the form of
a swimming man-headed bull. Under the rule of Hippocrates,
B. C. 498-491, and Gelon, B. C. 491-48J, it extended its dominion
over a large part of Sicily. In B. C. 488 Gelon transferred his capital
from Gela to Syracuse, but in B. C. 466, the inhabitants of Gela were
restored to their native city, which enjoyed great prosperity until its
destruction by the Carthaginians in B.C. 40J.
Before circ. B. C. 466.
