DESCRIPTION<br />

Selinus<br />

(Ss/uvisic, SeXivou?) situated on the Selinus river on the ivestern part of<br />

the south coast of Sicily. An early colony of Megara Hyblaea. It deriv-<br />

ed its name from the river, which in turn was named from the wild<br />

celery (usAivov) which grew plentifully on its banks. <strong>The</strong> town rose to<br />

great prosperity in B. C. 472-461, but was destroyed by the Carthagi-<br />

nians in B. C. 409.<br />
