As this graph shows, the<br />
correct tension is critical to the<br />
life of the belt. Both excessive<br />
and insufficient tension can<br />
damage the belt and cause<br />
premature failure.<br />
General hints<br />
• Lock engine cams using correct tools to prevent slippage and movement. Do not use the teeth of the<br />
belt to block the engine when loosening or tightening the pulley bolts.<br />
• Do not use solvents to clean the pulleys.<br />
• Check that the auxiliary <strong>com</strong>ponents controlled by the timing system (water pump, etc) are functioning<br />
correctly. If in doubt, re<strong>com</strong>mend a change to the customer while making the repair.<br />
• Check for wear on the flanges. Rotate the driving shaft to the TDC of cylinder number 1; in the case of<br />
an engine with a double camshaft, assure that both are in the TDC position.
