The heart <strong>of</strong> the city is the down<strong>to</strong>wn area, with<br />

Queen’s Park Savannah at the Northern edge <strong>and</strong><br />

the Brian Lara Promenade <strong>to</strong> the South, l<strong>in</strong>ked by a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> busy commercial streets. Port <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> is a<br />

mixture <strong>of</strong> elements both modern <strong>and</strong> rustic. At South<br />

Quay, the impressive <strong>and</strong> ultramodern waterfront project<br />

tips a hat <strong>to</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad’s future. At the Queen’s Park<br />

Savannah, a row <strong>of</strong> mansions called the Magnificent<br />

Seven that l<strong>in</strong>es the western side displays the country’s<br />

strong heritage. Along the northern flank, the Botanic<br />

Gardens <strong>and</strong> the Emperor Valley Zoo adjo<strong>in</strong> the<br />

When Port <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong> became the<br />

Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t is a major <strong>to</strong>wn <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>, as it hosts<br />

the Arthur NR Rob<strong>in</strong>son International Airport (formerly<br />

Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t International Airport) as well as many<br />

five-star hotels, <strong>and</strong> is a ma<strong>in</strong> centre for <strong>to</strong>urism.<br />

the 20th century. This festival attracts close <strong>to</strong> 40,000<br />

visi<strong>to</strong>rs annually which directly contributes an estimated<br />

TT$18 million dollars <strong>in</strong> revenue. The diverse<br />

cultural <strong>and</strong> religious background<br />

<strong>of</strong> the people allows for many festivities<br />

<strong>and</strong> ceremonies throughout<br />

the year. Other <strong>in</strong>digenous art forms<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude soca (a derivative <strong>of</strong> calypso),<br />

parang (Venezuelan-<strong>in</strong>fluenced<br />

Christmas music), chutney <strong>and</strong> the<br />

famous Limbo dance. There are<br />

several art galleries <strong>in</strong> the Port <strong>of</strong><br />

Spa<strong>in</strong> area that feature the works <strong>of</strong><br />

both local <strong>and</strong> foreign artists. Small<br />

but vibrant theatre <strong>and</strong> dance companies<br />

thrive <strong>in</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad as well. The<br />

cultural diversity <strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong><br />

is further reflected <strong>in</strong> the variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> local food choices that range<br />

from Indian <strong>in</strong>fluenced <strong>to</strong> the local<br />

Creole cuis<strong>in</strong>e. There is also a wide<br />

choice <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational cuis<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong><br />

popular North American fast foods<br />

Language<br />

The <strong>of</strong>ficial language <strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> is English.<br />

Facilities exist for foreign language deal<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong><br />

translations, as may be required. In 2004, the government<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiated Spanish as a First Foreign Language<br />

Program, herald<strong>in</strong>g a large <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> Spanish pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

<strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g years.<br />
