Telecommunications<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> has a modern telecommunications<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure with the latest <strong>in</strong> digital <strong>and</strong> fibreoptic<br />

technology. Telecommunications Services <strong>of</strong><br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> Limited (TSTT) <strong>and</strong> Columbus<br />

Communications Ltd. (Flow Tr<strong>in</strong>idad) are the only l<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

service providers <strong>in</strong> the country. Both TSTT <strong>and</strong><br />

Digicel, an Irish-based telecommunications provider<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Caribbean, <strong>of</strong>fer mobile phone services<br />

<strong>in</strong> both isl<strong>and</strong>s. International Direct Distance Dial<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is available nationwide <strong>and</strong> on public payphones.<br />

The International Access Code for Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong><br />

is (1), followed by the Country Code (868), <strong>and</strong><br />

the seven-digit local number. International phone<br />

cards are sold <strong>in</strong> many local shops, pharmacies <strong>and</strong><br />

at TSTT <strong>of</strong>fices. With broad coverage throughout the<br />

isl<strong>and</strong>s, cell phones are an easy <strong>and</strong> available option.<br />

Internet <strong>and</strong> email services are cheap <strong>and</strong> easy <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

at hotels, cybercafés <strong>and</strong> via smartphones.<br />

Electricity<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> has a reliable supply <strong>of</strong> electricity<br />

with rates among the lowest <strong>in</strong> the Caribbean. The<br />

domestic <strong>and</strong> commercial supply voltage is 115/230<br />

volts (+/- 6 percent) <strong>and</strong> 60Hz.<br />

Water<br />

The Water <strong>and</strong> Sewerage Authority (WASA), a state<br />

enterprise, is the sole provider <strong>of</strong> water services <strong>in</strong><br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>. The water service is reliable <strong>in</strong><br />

most hotels <strong>and</strong> guesthouses. The water is chlor<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

<strong>and</strong> safe <strong>to</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k. Several good bottled water<br />

alternatives are available at supermarkets.<br />

Transportation<br />

Driv<strong>in</strong>g is on the left-h<strong>and</strong> side. International visi<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

<strong>to</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> may drive on the roadways<br />

for up <strong>to</strong> n<strong>in</strong>ety (90) days but must have an International<br />

Driver’s Permit or a valid driver’s licence from<br />

the Bahamas, Canada, Engl<strong>and</strong>, France, Germany, or<br />

the United States. Most rental car companies require<br />

drivers <strong>to</strong> be at least twenty-five (25) years old <strong>and</strong><br />

have at least two (2) years <strong>of</strong> driv<strong>in</strong>g experience.<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> has an extensive transportation<br />

network <strong>of</strong> paved roads, which underwent major<br />

improvements <strong>in</strong> 2000. Major highways l<strong>in</strong>k the<br />

north <strong>and</strong> south <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>and</strong> (Uriah Butler Highway,<br />

Solomon Hochoy Highway), <strong>and</strong> the east <strong>and</strong> west<br />

(Churchill-Roosevelt Highway); however, traffic is<br />

heavy at peak hours when a large number <strong>of</strong> vehicles<br />

head <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> or exit the capital city <strong>and</strong> environs. There<br />

is ample public transport around Port <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>, so it’s<br />

easy <strong>to</strong> get around. The “maxi taxi” st<strong>and</strong>s near the<br />

Brian Lara Promenade are the hub <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ibus routes<br />

throughout the city <strong>and</strong> beyond. Route taxis are also<br />

available <strong>and</strong> will pick up <strong>and</strong> drop <strong>of</strong>f passengers<br />

along the ma<strong>in</strong> roads. Beyond the Brian Lara Promenade,<br />

on South Quay is the big City Gate hub, from<br />

where buses <strong>and</strong> maxi-taxis serve every corner <strong>of</strong> the<br />

isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Airports<br />

Piarco International Airport is 27 km (17 miles) from<br />

Port <strong>of</strong> Spa<strong>in</strong>. Airport code POS. Arthur NR Rob<strong>in</strong>son<br />

International Airport (formerly Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t International<br />

Airport) is 10 km (7 miles) from Scarborough.<br />
