production companies employ a core staff <strong>of</strong> approximately<br />

200 full-time employees, while the television stations<br />

employ over 700 persons. Expertise abounds <strong>in</strong><br />

the production <strong>of</strong> commercials <strong>and</strong> corporate videos.<br />

Roughly 253 foreign film crews came through Tr<strong>in</strong>idad<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the period 2005-2010, generat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

revenues <strong>of</strong> TT$32.8 million. Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> can<br />

boast a unique advantage, with its concentrated variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> contrast<strong>in</strong>g locations with<strong>in</strong> the close proximity.<br />

Opportunity For Investment:<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> area for <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the Film Industry <strong>in</strong><br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> is the proposed development <strong>of</strong><br />

a sound stage that would provide facilities for the production<br />

<strong>of</strong> films, more sophisticated commercials <strong>and</strong><br />

game shows.<br />

Fish And Fish Process<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The domestic fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry has been an economic<br />

contribu<strong>to</strong>r for over 200 years <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>day encompasses<br />

a diversified range <strong>of</strong> activities.<br />

Fish-harvest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volves large <strong>and</strong> small opera<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

target<strong>in</strong>g near shore <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>fshore fish<strong>in</strong>g zones, with<br />

vessels that range from small five-man pirogues <strong>to</strong><br />

large trawlers which put <strong>to</strong> sea for months at a time.<br />

There is also an established <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationally recognised,<br />

exp<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g sport fish<strong>in</strong>g sub-sec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

The on-shore sec<strong>to</strong>r comprises bus<strong>in</strong>esses which<br />

specialise <strong>in</strong> boat build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> repair, <strong>and</strong> specialty<br />

supply shops. However, the largest <strong>and</strong> most pr<strong>of</strong>itable<br />

onshore activity rema<strong>in</strong>s the fish process<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

which cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> export quality fish products<br />

<strong>to</strong> regional <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets.<br />

Opportunity For Investment:<br />

There are significant opportunities <strong>in</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fshore harvest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r, particularly among long-l<strong>in</strong>ers. With<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> sport fish<strong>in</strong>g, new bus<strong>in</strong>ess developments<br />

are tak<strong>in</strong>g shape <strong>in</strong> this sub-sec<strong>to</strong>r, especially<br />

<strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> craft <strong>and</strong> facility rentals. There are<br />

Music And Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

Epi<strong>to</strong>miz<strong>in</strong>g the term “cultural <strong>in</strong>dustry”, the local music/enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

sec<strong>to</strong>r has a long-st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g his<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

first emerg<strong>in</strong>g as viable revenue generat<strong>in</strong>g activities<br />

<strong>in</strong> the pre-war era, <strong>and</strong> surg<strong>in</strong>g forward <strong>in</strong> post-World<br />

War II Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>, particularly due <strong>to</strong> the<br />

presence <strong>of</strong> the United States military base, a grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

upper middle class which dem<strong>and</strong>ed quality enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

<strong>and</strong> the ris<strong>in</strong>g tide <strong>of</strong> pro-Independence<br />

sentiment sweep<strong>in</strong>g the country. As the years passed,<br />

music <strong>in</strong>dustry opera<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>in</strong>teracted more <strong>and</strong> more<br />

with their US based counterparts; soca music evolved<br />

out <strong>of</strong> calypso; there was <strong>in</strong>creased cross-fertilization<br />

with regional artistes; new, powerful performers with<br />

an <strong>in</strong>ternational appeal emerged from the ranks; <strong>and</strong><br />

consequently the local music <strong>and</strong> enterta<strong>in</strong>ment sec<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
