support growth <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
Sec<strong>to</strong>r Pr<strong>of</strong>ile:<br />
The local food <strong>and</strong> beverage Industry is a stalwart <strong>of</strong><br />
the non-energy manufactur<strong>in</strong>g sec<strong>to</strong>r, contribut<strong>in</strong>g approximately<br />
TT$4.1 billion <strong>to</strong> GDP <strong>in</strong> 2009, amount<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>to</strong> 52 percent <strong>of</strong> overall Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g GDP. There are<br />
on record 430 firms, employ<strong>in</strong>g some 11, 000 people.<br />

With cont<strong>in</strong>ued expansion <strong>of</strong> the local economy, the<br />
domestic food <strong>and</strong> beverage sec<strong>to</strong>r is expected <strong>to</strong><br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue along its progressive track. In addition, expansion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the regional economy, renewed efforts<br />
for research <strong>and</strong> further product development, <strong>and</strong><br />
strategic niche market<strong>in</strong>g will also support susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
growth over the longer term.<br />
Opportunity For Investment:<br />
The food <strong>and</strong> beverage sec<strong>to</strong>r cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer significant<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment opportunities, particularly for manufacturers<br />
who utilise unique regional agro-products<br />
<strong>to</strong> develop goods such as rum flavored chocolate<br />
cakes, Caribbean fruitcakes, sauces <strong>and</strong> spices, s<strong>of</strong>t<br />
dr<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>and</strong> exotic fruit juices, specialty rums, <strong>and</strong> bottled<br />
water.<br />
Given the rapid open<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>of</strong> global markets, the <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
appreciation <strong>in</strong> the Northern hemisphere for<br />
“exotic” foods, <strong>and</strong> the growth <strong>of</strong> the gourmet lifestyle<br />
<strong>in</strong> the more developed metropolitan communities,<br />
the local food <strong>and</strong> beverage sec<strong>to</strong>r has a unique opportunity<br />
<strong>to</strong> br<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> create specialty foods for the<br />
overseas gourmet markets, apart from the traditional<br />
focus on the diasporic markets. There are also sp<strong>in</strong><strong>of</strong>f<br />
opportunities <strong>in</strong> valued-added activities such as<br />
market research, advertis<strong>in</strong>g, br<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g, pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
packag<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the certification <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes<br />

Film<br />
Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>’s film sec<strong>to</strong>r is usually def<strong>in</strong>ed as a<br />
cultural <strong>in</strong>dustry. The local film sec<strong>to</strong>r began emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> the late sixties <strong>and</strong> by the late seventies, there were a<br />
h<strong>and</strong>ful <strong>of</strong> local productions—both feature film <strong>and</strong> television.<br />
Along with our geographic location, the country<br />
has substantial resources for the production <strong>of</strong> feature<br />
films, with a well developed theatrical community,<br />
playwrights, experienced production crews, etcetera.<br />
The components <strong>of</strong> the local film <strong>in</strong>dustry are:<br />
• Creative—screenwriters, film direc<strong>to</strong>rs, art direc<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />
ac<strong>to</strong>rs, direc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> pho<strong>to</strong>graphy, anima<strong>to</strong>rs,<br />
music composers, edi<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
• Production—producers acquire the rights for a<br />
property, assemble the creative team, secure f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
develop the property <strong>and</strong> arrange distribution<br />
• Distribution—local, regional <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
• Exhibition—theatrical (c<strong>in</strong>emas, DVD, video outlets)<br />
<strong>and</strong> non-theatrical (schools, Government<br />
<strong>and</strong> other <strong>in</strong>stitutions)<br />
• Broadcast<strong>in</strong>g—television, direct television, cable,<br />
pay-per-view, specialty <strong>and</strong> conventional<br />
channels<br />
• Products <strong>of</strong> the local film sec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong>clude feature<br />
films, documentaries, television dramas <strong>and</strong><br />
sitcoms, enterta<strong>in</strong>ment programmes, commercials,<br />
corporate productions<br />
• Government productions, educational programmes,<br />
<strong>and</strong> music videos<br />
