Introduc<strong>in</strong>g Tr<strong>in</strong>idad & <strong>Tobago</strong><br />

T<br />

he Republic <strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> comprises<br />

the two most southerly isles <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Caribbean archipelago. A former British colony,<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>dependence<br />

on August 31, 1962 <strong>and</strong> later became a republic<br />

on August 1, 1976.<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad is 4,828 sq km (1,864 sq mi) <strong>in</strong> area <strong>and</strong> approximately<br />

rectangular <strong>in</strong> shape (roughly the size <strong>of</strong><br />

Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the USA). It is 81.25 km long by 57-<br />

73 km wide, or 50 miles by 35-45 miles. Once attached<br />

<strong>to</strong> the South American ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>, the isl<strong>and</strong> is<br />

situated 12 km (7 miles) northeast <strong>of</strong> the coast <strong>of</strong> Venezuela<br />

<strong>and</strong> is separated from it by the Gulf <strong>of</strong> Paria, <strong>in</strong><br />

which there are several islets, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Chacachacare,<br />

Huevos, Monos <strong>and</strong> Gaspar Gr<strong>and</strong>e. The isl<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad has three (3) mounta<strong>in</strong> ranges. The Northern<br />

Range with the highest po<strong>in</strong>t, El Cerro del Aripo,<br />

at 940 metres (3,084 ft) above sea level, is an extension<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Andes mounta<strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>. It runs along the<br />

northern coast <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> is home <strong>to</strong> the majority<br />

<strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad’s lush ra<strong>in</strong>forest <strong>and</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> wild<br />

species eagerly sought by nature lovers. The Central<br />

Range, runs diagonally across the isl<strong>and</strong>, consist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> flat pla<strong>in</strong>s where sugar cane <strong>and</strong> other cash crops<br />

are grown. The Southern Range, featur<strong>in</strong>g roll<strong>in</strong>g hills,<br />

runs along the southern coast <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

home <strong>to</strong> the La Brea Pitch Lake, from which asphalt<br />

is produced.<br />

<strong>Tobago</strong>, 300 sq km (116 sq miles) <strong>in</strong> area, lies 34 km<br />

(21 miles) northeast <strong>of</strong> Tr<strong>in</strong>idad. Of volcanic orig<strong>in</strong>, the<br />

isl<strong>and</strong> is a s<strong>in</strong>gle mounta<strong>in</strong> mass, although the southwest<br />

is flat or undulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> corall<strong>in</strong>e. The highest<br />

peak, the Ma<strong>in</strong> Ridge, reaches an elevation <strong>of</strong> about<br />

576 metres (1,890 ft). The coastl<strong>in</strong>e is broken by <strong>in</strong>lets<br />

<strong>and</strong> sheltered beaches, <strong>and</strong> there are several un<strong>in</strong>habited<br />

islets. The isl<strong>and</strong> is <strong>to</strong>urism dependent with<br />

the famous Buccoo Reef be<strong>in</strong>g the star attraction.<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad is home <strong>to</strong> 95% <strong>of</strong> the <strong>to</strong>tal population <strong>of</strong> 1.3<br />

million people <strong>and</strong> the balance resides <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>.<br />

Fly<strong>in</strong>g time: 8.7 hours<br />

Climate<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a mar<strong>in</strong>e, tropical climate,<br />

with sunny weather throughout. Daytime temperatures<br />

average 31ºC (87ºF) moderated by northeast<br />

trade w<strong>in</strong>ds, while nights are a cool 21ºC (69ºF). Tr<strong>in</strong>idad<br />

possesses two dist<strong>in</strong>ct seasons – dry, from January<br />

<strong>to</strong> May, <strong>and</strong> wet, from June <strong>to</strong> December. There is<br />

a short dry period around mid-September called Petit<br />

Carême, which is an excellent <strong>of</strong>f-season time <strong>to</strong> visit.<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad is just outside the usual path <strong>of</strong> hurricanes <strong>and</strong><br />

other tropical s<strong>to</strong>rms but <strong>Tobago</strong> can experience <strong>in</strong>clement<br />

weather as a result <strong>of</strong> such weather systems.<br />

His<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

Before the arrival <strong>of</strong> Columbus <strong>in</strong> 1498 the isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

were <strong>in</strong>habited by Amer<strong>in</strong>dian tribes - ma<strong>in</strong>ly the<br />

Caribs <strong>and</strong> the Arawaks. Though the descendents<br />

<strong>of</strong> those <strong>in</strong>digenous <strong>in</strong>habitants have dw<strong>in</strong>dled <strong>in</strong><br />

numbers, many aspects <strong>of</strong> Amer<strong>in</strong>dian culture were<br />

preserved, <strong>and</strong> many <strong>to</strong>wns, rivers <strong>and</strong> boroughs are<br />

named with Amer<strong>in</strong>dian words. The isl<strong>and</strong> was settled<br />

by the Spanish <strong>in</strong> the late 1500’s. Although it attracted<br />

French, free Black, <strong>and</strong> other non-Spanish settlers,<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad rema<strong>in</strong>ed under Spanish rule until the British<br />

captured it <strong>in</strong> 1797. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the colonial period,<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>idad’s economy relied on large sugar <strong>and</strong> cocoa<br />

plantations.<br />

<strong>Tobago</strong>’s development was quite different from Tr<strong>in</strong>idad’s.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the colonial period, French, Dutch, <strong>and</strong><br />

British forces fought for possession <strong>of</strong> the isl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

which changed h<strong>and</strong>s twenty-two (22) times - more<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten than any other West Indian isl<strong>and</strong>. <strong>Tobago</strong> was<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ally ceded <strong>to</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1814. Tr<strong>in</strong>idad <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong><br />

was <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle colony <strong>in</strong> 1888.<br />
