program designed to identify family
members with long-term health care or
special education needs. It ensures
service members will be assigned to a
location where the special needs of the
family will be met.
Financial
Management
Moving to a new area can be expensive.
Deposits, new furnishings and the
cost of temporary lodging may put a
strain on a budget. The FFSC’s trained
financial counselor provides personal
financial counseling to service members
and family members. Workshops
are presented on all aspects of financial
management, including investing and
buying a house.
Information &
Referral (I&R)
Any question or need will prompt a
ready referral to the appropriate military
or civilian resource. The I&R counselor
can give information about the
Exceptional Family Member Program,
schools, child care providers, Navy
lodges, legal aide, voting registration
and much more. Come in for a “one
stop” information and referral service.
Ombudsman
Program
An ombudsman is a volunteer
spouse, trained to act as a liaison
between family members and the
active-duty command. The Work and
Family Life Consultant is the ombudsman
program coordinator for Pax River.
Relocation
Assistance
Relocation is a way of life in the military.
As service members arrive or prepare
to leave, personal property may
be somewhere else. The FFSC can
assist by loaning hospitality kits to military
members and their families. Kits
At Your Service
include pots, pans, dishes, utensils,
toasters and irons. In addition, they
may also check out futons, linens, ironing
boards, car seats, and tables and
chairs.
In addition to this service, for
inbound members, the FFSC also mails
station welcome aboard packets, coordinates
the Sponsor Program, and
updates the Standard Installation Topic
Exchange Service (SITES) booklets with
current base and community information.
For outbound members, the FFSC
will lend welcome packets and videos
of your new base and provide a SITES
booklet. The relocation counselor will
also request information and a sponsor
at your new assignment.
The FFSC’s goal is to make your
move a pleasant one. With classes such
as: Welcome to Pax, Kids on the Move
and Smooth Move-Home or Abroad,
we can answer your questions and provide
you with valuable information.
Veterans Affairs
A Veterans Affairs benefits counselor
visits the FFSC several days each month
to answer questions concerning VA
benefits and services. All veterans, transitioning
service members and family
members are eligible for this service.
Mattapany
Day Camp
301-342-1694/4800
Mattapany Day Camp is one of the
most highly anticipated summer programs
on station. The popular day
camp offers children ages five, who
have completed kindergarten, through
12 years structured care in an outdoor
setting. Campers enjoy arts and crafts,
nature walks, swimming lessons, day
trips and other special events.
Registration is held in March. Due to
the popularity of camp, full time
employees with children enrolled in
the School Age Care program during
the school year have priority to camp
registration. Any unfilled spots are then
available to active-duty military, DoD
employees and contractors on a firstcome,
first-served basis. Registration
details are available in the Tester and
Patuxent Trails in February.
Sustainability
Office
Citizens may express their concerns
regarding noise generated from NAS
Patuxent River by contacting the station
via telephone or mail. A noise disturbance
hotline was established in
November 2001 to receive noise disturbance
reports from the community. The
hotline is typically manned from 8 a.m.
