ANNAPOLIS<br />

Originally founded in 1649 by Puritan<br />

families from Virginia, Annapolis has<br />

grown to be<strong>com</strong>e an impressive<br />

example of life and architecture of the<br />

pre-Revolutionary period. Annapolis is<br />

known as having one of the highest<br />

concentrations of 18th century buildings<br />

in the United States.<br />

See and Do<br />

U.S. <strong>Naval</strong> Academy<br />

Founded in 1845 by George Bancroft,<br />

then Secretary of the Navy, the U.S.<br />

<strong>Naval</strong> Academy occupies the site of old<br />

Fort Severn. The academy is the home of<br />

numerous relics and displays relating to<br />

maritime history. The Preble Hall museum<br />

houses displays of battle flags,<br />

Annapolis city dock and State House<br />

weapons, ship models and statues. A<br />

special room in the museum is<br />

dedicated to the contributions of Navy<br />

astronauts.<br />

“Commissioning Week” and graduation<br />

day are special times with colorful<br />

parades of students in full dress uniforms.<br />

The academy is located at King<br />

George and Randall streets in Annapolis.<br />
