BEYOND BEGINNING WHITEWATER KAYAKING<br />

This class is designed for people who have had previous<br />

whitewater experience. Students will learn and perfect<br />

advanced whitewater techniques on class III water. Prerequisites<br />

include a kayak roll on moving water and solid class 11+<br />

skills.<br />

Class will meet Thursday, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m., in the<br />

RCC pool through spring break. After that, river trips will<br />

meet Thursday, 12:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. To register, sign up at<br />

the first class in the RCC. Enrollment is limited to six<br />

students by instructor permission.<br />

EVOLUTION<br />

Scared <strong>of</strong> the water? Can't swim? Or just want to<br />

improve your stroke technique?<br />

Becoming a competent performer in the water requires<br />

learning some basic fundamental skills. If you have the desire<br />

to learn [0 swim, here is the perfect opportunity! This class<br />

will focus on helping the adult student better understand and<br />

adapt to the water environment. We will work on keeping the<br />

"fun in fundamental," as we learn floats, glides, propulsive<br />

movements, breath control and personal safety techniques.<br />

This course is taught by an American Red Cross certified<br />

instructor. and is otherwise known as Beginning Swimming­<br />

Level I.<br />

Class will meet Wednesday, 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., in<br />

the RCC pool.<br />

OPRA 145<br />

LIFEGUARD TRAINING<br />

This course will prepare and qualify you to become a Red<br />

Cross-certified Lifeguard. Bearers <strong>of</strong> this card are eligible to<br />

obtain work at pools nationwide. <strong>Hampshire</strong> studems<br />

successfully completing this course will be eligible for<br />

employment at the RCC pool. To complete this course you<br />

must practice and be tested on water entries and carries.<br />

swimming rescues, stroke work, and spinal management.<br />

Standard First Aid and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional CPR will be included<br />

in the above class format.<br />

Class will meet Tuesday and Wednesday in the RCC<br />

pool, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Enrollment is limited to 10.<br />

Materials fee $55.<br />

OPRA 149<br />

OPENWATER SCUBA CERTIFICATION<br />

Project Deep<br />

This is an N.A.U.I.-sanctioned course leading to open<br />

water SCUBA certification. One and one-half hours <strong>of</strong> pool<br />

time and one and one-half hours <strong>of</strong> classroom instruction per<br />

week. Class will meet at the RCC pool Monday, 6:00 p.m.-<br />

7:30 p.m., and elsewhere in the RCC, 7:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m.,<br />

for classroom instruction. Fee: $195 plus mask, fins, snorkel,<br />

and text. All other equipment provided. Prerequisite: adequate<br />

swimming skills. Enrollment is open.<br />

OPRA 151<br />

BEGINNING TOP ROPE CLIMBING<br />

This class begins after spring break. It is for people with<br />

little or no climbing experience. It will cover basic safety<br />

techniques. rope work. knots, and climbing techniques. Enjoy<br />

the opportunity to exercise your body and mind through such<br />

media as an indoor climbing wall and local climbing areas.<br />

The climbing wall will open the first Thursday aftet January<br />

Term ends, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. All persons interested in<br />

taking Beginning Climbing are encouraged to attend these<br />

sessions.<br />

Enrollment is limited [Q 12. Class will meet Thursday,<br />

12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., starting after spring break.<br />

OPRA 156<br />

LEAD ROCK CLIMBING<br />

Part I is open to people who have a background in top<br />

rope climbing but who lack a complete understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> climbing. Part II is open to anyone who has a<br />

thorough understanding (including firsthand experience <strong>of</strong><br />

the areas covered in Part I). Anyone successfully completing<br />

Part I may take Part II. The goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to prepare<br />

people to be competent seconds for multipitch climbs and to<br />

provide ins[fuction in lead climbing.<br />

PART I. TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION<br />

This section covers rope management, anchors, belaying<br />

the leader, and chockcraft.<br />

PART II. TECHNICAL CLIMBING<br />

We will actuate the theories covered in Part I and<br />

students may start to lead climb as part <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

Class will meet Tuesday, 1 :00 p.m.-3:30 p.m., until<br />

spring break. After spring break, class will meet 12:30 p.m.-<br />

5:30 p.m.<br />

OPRA 161<br />

BICYCLE MAINTENANCE<br />

Earl Alderson<br />

While the weather is still too bad to ride, why not put a<br />

few hours a week into fixing up and fine-tuning your bicycle?<br />

We'll start with a "Scientific American" look at the efficiency<br />

<strong>of</strong> the bicycle as a machine and then tear our bikes all the way<br />

down and build them back up clean, greased, tuned. and<br />

ready for the fair weather.<br />

Enrollment is limited to 10. No previous mechanical<br />

experience is assumed. Class will meet in the RCC Wednesday,<br />

3:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m., until spring break.
