SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND<br />
COGNITIVE SCIENCE<br />
Joan Braderman, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> video, film] and media<br />
studies, has a B.A. from Radcliffe <strong>College</strong> and an M.A. and<br />
M.Phil. from New York University. Her award-winning<br />
documentaries and art videos have been shown on PBS, and<br />
in many galleries, festivals, cable stations. and universities<br />
internationally and are in the permanent collections <strong>of</strong> such<br />
museums as the Stedelijk in Amsterdam. the Centre<br />
Pompidou in Paris, and the Institute <strong>of</strong> Contemporary Art in<br />
London. She has written and spoken widely on the politics <strong>of</strong><br />
representadon in video and film and was a founding member<br />
<strong>of</strong> Heresies: A Feminist Journal on Art and Politics. Writing<br />
about her work has appeared in such publications as The<br />
Village Voice, The Independent, Afterimage, Contemporanea,<br />
and The Guardian (London). She has received grants from<br />
the Jerome Foundation, New York State Council on the<br />
Arts, Massachusetts Council on the Arts, New York Foundation<br />
on the Arts, and others. She has taught at the School <strong>of</strong><br />
Visual Arts, N.Y.U .• and her teaching interests continue in<br />
video production in a variety <strong>of</strong> genres and in film. video,<br />
art, and media history and theory.<br />
Christopher Chase, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> cognitive<br />
<strong>science</strong>, received his B.A. from St. John's <strong>College</strong> and his<br />
Ph.D. in neuro<strong>science</strong> from the University <strong>of</strong> California at<br />
San Diego (UCSD). Before coming to <strong>Hampshire</strong>, he was a<br />
research associate at the UCSD medical center in the division<br />
<strong>of</strong> pediatric neurology where he studied developmental<br />
neuropathology in children with disorders such as cystinosis.<br />
Williams syndrome, focal brain damage, language and<br />
reading disabilities, and AIDS. He reaches courses in the<br />
field <strong>of</strong> cognitive neuro<strong>science</strong> that explore the biological<br />
foundations <strong>of</strong> mental functions. He directs the Reading<br />
Research Laboratory and co-directs the Lemelson Evoked<br />
Potential Lab. His research interests include cognitive<br />
neuropsychology. reading development. learning disabilities.<br />
and connectionist modeling. He currently is studying visual<br />
processing deficits that interfere with letter and word<br />
recognition in developmentally dyslexic readers. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
Chase will be on sabbatical leave during spring term 1998.<br />
Raymond Coppinger, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> biology, has worked<br />
at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the<br />
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. the United States<br />
Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Beebe Tropical Research<br />
Station in the West Indies. He holds a Four <strong>College</strong> Ph.D.<br />
(Amherst. Smith, Mount Holyoke, University <strong>of</strong> Massachuse([s).<br />
Varied interests include animal behavior. birds, dogs<br />

,monkeY$. ecology. evolution, forestry, philosophy. and<br />
neoteny theory (book in progress). Dr. Coppinger has been a<br />
past New England sled dog racing champion and now works<br />
with rare breeds <strong>of</strong> sheepdogs. His research leads to numerous<br />
technical and popular publications in most <strong>of</strong> these<br />
fields.<br />
Mark Feinstein, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> linguistics, is co-dean <strong>of</strong><br />
Cognitive Science and Cultural Studies. He holds a Ph.D.<br />
from the City University <strong>of</strong> New York, and has been at<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong> since 1976. His teaching and research interestsoriginally<br />
focused on the phonetics and phonology (sound<br />
patterns) <strong>of</strong> human language-are now more broadly<br />
concerned with general bioacoustics, animal cognition and<br />
communication, mammalian vocalization and behavior, and<br />
the evolution <strong>of</strong> cognition and behavior. He is a co-author <strong>of</strong><br />
Cognitive Science: An Introduction (MIT Press) and has<br />
published papers on phonological structure, communication<br />
in the canids. and the evolution <strong>of</strong> vocal behavior.<br />
David Kerr, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> mass communications<br />
and Merrill House director <strong>of</strong> academic life, has a B.A.<br />
from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. and M.A.s from<br />
Vanderbilt University and Indiana University. He has<br />
worked as a reporter and editor and teaches courses in<br />
journalism and history <strong>of</strong> the American press. His educational<br />
interests include the role <strong>of</strong> the press in the debate<br />
over imperialism. travel and safari writings. issues in popular<br />
culture. and cultural studies.<br />
Zhaolu Lu, visiting assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> philosophy,<br />
received his B.A. from Beijing Normal University and his<br />
Ph.D. from the University <strong>of</strong> Western Ontario. His teaching<br />
and research interests are in Chinese philosophy and the<br />
philosophical foundations <strong>of</strong> cognitive <strong>science</strong> (issues<br />
involved in philosophy <strong>of</strong> perception, philosophy <strong>of</strong> mind,<br />
philosophical psychology or philosophy <strong>of</strong> psychology,<br />
epistemology, philosophy <strong>of</strong> language, logic). He has taught<br />
10 undergraduate and graduate programs at Beijing Normal<br />
University. the University <strong>of</strong> Western Ontario, and<br />
Concordia University.<br />
. Meredith Michaels, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> philosophy.<br />
IS co-dean <strong>of</strong> Cognitive Science and Cultural Studies. She<br />
taught philosophy and women's studies at Mount Holyoke<br />
<strong>College</strong> before coming to <strong>Hampshire</strong>. She has a B.A. from<br />
the University <strong>of</strong> California, Santa Barbara, and an M.A. and<br />
a Ph. D. from the University <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts. She teaches<br />
courses in metaphysics. epistemology. and ethics. and has<br />
worked extensively on a variety <strong>of</strong> issues in feminist theory<br />
and pedagogy.
