uildings linked by a series <strong>of</strong> stairways and catwalks. Among<br />
its buildings are several faculty <strong>of</strong>fices and classrooms and the<br />
student-run Mixed Nuts Food Co-op.<br />
Greenwich House consists <strong>of</strong> several circular buildings<br />
(called "dooms") on the northern edge <strong>of</strong> the campus.<br />
Though just a shan walk from the college's main academic<br />
buildings, its location affords considerable privacy and quiet.<br />
Each donut contains eight two-story apartments and a large<br />
common space which serves different functions in each donut.<br />
Enfield House. located in a meadow near the main<br />
campus entrance, consists <strong>of</strong> two- and three-story buildings<br />
with spacious living areas and large windows looking out on<br />
the campus and surrounding hills. Like the dormitories.<br />
Prescott, Greenwich, and Enfield houses sponsor a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>social</strong> and academic events.<br />
Students sharing a mod may do all their cooking and<br />
food buying cooperatively. or they may purchase a meal plan<br />
for the .dining commons. Declining balance accounts and<br />
partial meal plans are also available for apartment residents.<br />
THE FIVE COLLEGE AREA<br />
The richness <strong>of</strong> student life at <strong>Hampshire</strong> is enhanced by<br />
the college's location in the Five <strong>College</strong> area-"the Valley,"<br />
as it is called by its residents. Cooperation among the five<br />
insdtutions extends to <strong>social</strong> and cultural life. Each <strong>of</strong> the Five<br />
<strong>College</strong>s <strong>of</strong>fers a full program <strong>of</strong> films. lectures, artistic<br />
performances, and exhibitions open to all members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
community. The Five <strong>College</strong> bus service, free to all students<br />
and members <strong>of</strong> the community. makes frequent stops at each<br />
campus during weekdays. evenings. and weekends.<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong> students also participate in a number <strong>of</strong> Five<br />
<strong>College</strong> organizations, such as the Five <strong>College</strong> Orchestra, the<br />
Asian Students Alliance. and the Hillel Foundation. Several<br />
have worked at the student-run radio stations at the other four<br />
campuses.<br />
Surrounding the colleges. the towns <strong>of</strong> Amherst (three<br />
miles from <strong>Hampshire</strong>), South Hadley (six miles from<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong>) and the city <strong>of</strong> Northampton (eight miles from<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong>) <strong>of</strong>fer a wealth <strong>of</strong> resources and events <strong>of</strong> their<br />
own. Movie theaters. bookstores, restaurants, cafes, galleries,<br />
and small shops enrich the <strong>social</strong> life and augment the<br />
academic and cultural resources <strong>of</strong> the Five <strong>College</strong> community.<br />
COLLEGE GOVERNANCE<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong> students participate in the governance <strong>of</strong> the<br />
college to a degree unusual in American colleges and universities.<br />
They serve on all <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hampshire</strong>'s governing bodies.<br />
Student members <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the boards have a vote equal to<br />
that <strong>of</strong> faculty, administration, and staff. Students also playa<br />
central role in the reappointment and promotion <strong>of</strong> faculty<br />
through participation in the <strong>College</strong> Commiuee on Faculty<br />
Reappointments and Promotions (CCFRAP). As members <strong>of</strong><br />
each <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hampshire</strong>'s four Schools, they affect curricular<br />
development and academic policy.<br />

STUDENT SERVICES<br />
THE CAREER OPTIONS RESOURCE CENTER, located on<br />
the third floor <strong>of</strong> the Johnson Library. helps <strong>Hampshire</strong><br />
students and alumnae make connections between their<br />
academic and personal interests and potential work opportunities<br />
as well as assisting them in making decisions about what<br />
to do after graduation. Its main function is to provide the<br />
resources and counseling necessary to help students set<br />
priorities, make choices, explore the world <strong>of</strong> work, choose a<br />
career, and apply for either graduate or pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>school</strong> or<br />
for a job.<br />
The CORC staff is concerned with helping students learn<br />
the "how to's" <strong>of</strong> planning: how to decide what to do, how to<br />
find an internship or summer job, how to prepare an effective<br />
resume and write a cover letter, how to research an organization.<br />
how to interview well, and how to select and gain<br />
admission to graduate <strong>school</strong> programs. The staff maintains<br />
an extensive resource library, <strong>of</strong>fers life/work exploratioo<br />
courses, runs group information sessions and workshops. and<br />
is available for both drop-in visits and scheduled individual<br />
counseling. In addition. each student receives a weekly CORC<br />
newsletter which lists information about jobs, Five <strong>College</strong><br />
events and employer recruiting schedules, internship and<br />
fellowship opportunities. and the recent activities and<br />
achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hampshire</strong> students and graduates. The<br />
Center also maintains bulletin boards around campus with<br />
Five <strong>College</strong> career planning newsletters and calendars, job<br />
openings, alumni news, local volunteer work positions.<br />
graduate <strong>school</strong> posters, fellowship announcements, summer<br />
program information, and work-related news items. It has a<br />
great deal <strong>of</strong> information on how to use the Internet for career<br />
exploration and the job search. The CORE home page<br />
features information on services. resources, and events.<br />
COUNSELOR/ADVOCATES AGAINST SEXUAL ABUSE<br />
provides counseling and support to students who have been<br />
victims <strong>of</strong> sexual or physical abuse. Staffed by a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
and several student volunteers, Counselor/Advocates train<br />
students in peer counseling and referral and serves as a<br />
resource for groups on other college campuses who wish to<br />
establish similar organizations.<br />
DISABILITIES SUPPORT SERVICES. <strong>Hampshire</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
is strongly committed to providing services to assure an<br />
accessible, supportive environment for students with disabilities.<br />
The college provides a variety <strong>of</strong> support services on an<br />
individual basis to students with special needs; three staff<br />
members share responsibility for the provision <strong>of</strong> services.<br />

To ensure the availability <strong>of</strong> necessary aids at the start <strong>of</strong><br />
any particular semester, a disabled student who believes he or<br />
she will need an auxiliary aid must notify the appropriate staff<br />
member <strong>of</strong> their request for assistance several weeks before the<br />
beginning <strong>of</strong> the term.
