BASIC FITNESS AND TRAINING<br />

This course will give students background knowledge,<br />
firsthand experience in stretching, weight lifting, and aerobic<br />
conditioning. We will cover the basics <strong>of</strong> flexibility training<br />
and <strong>of</strong> using your heart rate to guide aerobic conditioning,<br />
and we will assist you in designing an individualized weight<br />
training program.<br />
Each class session will include stretching. runningl<br />
walking, and weight lifting. People who have never been<br />
involved in a fitness program are especially welcome.<br />
Class will meet Tuesday and Thursday 8:30 a.m.-10:00<br />
a,m. in the Multi-Spon Center. Enrollment is limited to 12.<br />

BACKYARD WILDERNESS<br />
Karen Warren<br />
The Connecticut River Valley is a bioregion rich in<br />
natural variety and beauty. This course will be an opportunity<br />
to explore the natural places in our own backyard. The focus<br />
will be on different ways <strong>of</strong> experiencing the mountains,<br />
srreams, and valleys <strong>of</strong> the area. By foot, canoe,· and bike we<br />
will attempt to develop a sense <strong>of</strong> place with some truly<br />
magical local sites.<br />
Activities may include a swamp walk, canoeing on the<br />
Connecticut River, an overnight solo. a Holyoke Range hike.<br />
a night hike, and practicing skills used by native cultures. A<br />
weekend camping trip early in the course will provide a<br />
chance to explore what it means to "be a native to a place."<br />
Readings and projects will further develop this concept.<br />
Class will meet Thursday 1 :00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Enrollment<br />
is limited to 12.<br />

BEGINNING TENNIS<br />

This class is for those who've liked the game from afar<br />
and are now ready to get into the swing themselves. You'll<br />
leave this class with a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the basics<br />
(stroke production and game rules) to keep you playing one <strong>of</strong><br />
the best lifetime sports. Emphasis on group interaction and<br />
fun.<br />
Group lessons for three or more students may be<br />
arranged. Class will meet in the Multi-Sport Center, day and<br />
time to be determined. Instructor's permission required.<br />

INTERMEDIATE TENNIS<br />

For the occasional but avid player who's eager to improve.<br />
This class provides a solid review <strong>of</strong> basics, introduces<br />
spin. and looks at singles and doubles strategy. Meet other<br />
"court rats" and learn to evaluate your own play. A great lead·<br />
in for He Club Tennis.<br />

EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION, FROM THEORY TO<br />
PRACTICE<br />

This course will <strong>of</strong>fer an overview <strong>of</strong> the theoretical tenets<br />
<strong>of</strong> experiential education and how it can be applied in a<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> settings. including the outdoors and alternative and<br />
traditional classrooms.<br />
Topics to be addressed include current issues in experiential<br />
education, oppression and empowerment in education,<br />
teaching experientially. creative expression, and the historical<br />
and philosophical basis <strong>of</strong> experiential education.<br />
The course format will include readings. discussion, guest<br />
speakers, field experiences, and individual research and<br />
presentations on experiential education. An emphasis <strong>of</strong> the<br />
course will be for students to develop and work with curriculums<br />
based on experiential learning by creating studentfacilitated<br />
workshops and gaining exposure to experiential<br />
education methodology currently employed in the local area.<br />
The course is designed for Division II and III level<br />
students. Class will meet one afternoon a week for a four-hour<br />
session. An additional hour per week will be arranged.
