FIVE COLLEGE FACULTY OFFERINGS<br />
FIVE COLLEGE ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENT<br />
The Five <strong>College</strong> Astronomy course <strong>of</strong>ferings emphasize<br />
critical thinking and quantitative analysis. both <strong>of</strong> which are<br />
essential to scientific enquiry <strong>of</strong> any kind. Furthermore, the<br />
interdisciplinary nature <strong>of</strong> astronomy. which draws on<br />
mathematics. physics, computer <strong>science</strong> and the natural<br />
<strong>science</strong>s, provides ideal background and training for a range <strong>of</strong><br />
scientific pr<strong>of</strong>essions. Five <strong>College</strong> Astronomy courses are<br />
usually <strong>of</strong>fered each year; course locations tend to rotate<br />
among the Five <strong>College</strong> campuses and classes typically meet<br />
for two 70-minute sessions per week, plus additional time for<br />
laboratories. Registration for Five <strong>College</strong> astronomy classes<br />
should be done directly through Cemral Records at <strong>Hampshire</strong><br />
rather than through the <strong>school</strong> where the course is<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered. Students are urged to consult with Fred Wirth in the<br />
School <strong>of</strong> Natural Science to find how the Five <strong>College</strong><br />
astronomy <strong>of</strong>ferings fit into the <strong>Hampshire</strong> curriculum.<br />
Additional introductory courses are <strong>of</strong>fered on the other<br />
campuses and may he found in the appropriate catalog.<br />
FIVE COLLEGE DANCE DEPARTMENT<br />
The educational and artistic mission <strong>of</strong> the Five <strong>College</strong><br />
Dance Department (FCDD) is to champion the imaginative,<br />
expressive powers <strong>of</strong> human movement. The curriculum<br />
emphasizes in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> dance as an<br />
art form, including technical, creative, historical cultural and<br />
scientific perspectives. Students are encouraged to balance<br />
performance and creative studies with a comprehensive<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> the historical and cultural contexts <strong>of</strong><br />
different dance traditions. They may shape their major studies<br />
in either traditional or interdisciplinary ways....,..-reflecting the<br />
wide range <strong>of</strong> career options and new directions <strong>of</strong> the<br />
contemporary field.<br />
Each semester the FcnD <strong>of</strong>fice publishes an updated list<br />
<strong>of</strong> all dance courses <strong>of</strong>fered. Copies <strong>of</strong> this listing are available<br />
at the FCDD <strong>of</strong>fice in the <strong>Hampshire</strong> <strong>College</strong> Dance Building,<br />
at Central Records, at the <strong>Hampshire</strong> dance studio<br />

FIVE COLLEGE SELF·INSTRUCTIONAL LANGUAGE<br />
PROGRAM<br />
The Five <strong>College</strong> Self-Instructional Language Program<br />
affords students the opportunity to study languages that are<br />
not currently being <strong>of</strong>fered through traditional classroom<br />
instruction. At the beginning <strong>of</strong> the semester the student is<br />
given a goal to be reached by the semester's end. The student<br />
works independently on his or her home campus throughout<br />
the semester using a textbook, workbook, audiotapes,<br />
videotapes, and computer programs (various components are<br />
available for different languages). The student is assigned a<br />
native speaker (usually an international. student from the<br />
home campus) who serves as a conversation partner for one<br />
hour <strong>of</strong> conversation per week. At the end <strong>of</strong> the semester, a<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the target language is brought to campus to<br />
administer a 20-30 minute oral exam; from that exam, the<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor determines a grade for the course.<br />

This program is designed for students who are extremely<br />
self-motivated and secure in foreign language study, Students<br />
must have a personal interview with the program director;<br />
those with limited knowledge <strong>of</strong> a language must schedule a<br />
placement exam the semester before language study begins.<br />
The self-instfuctionallanguage program is being administered<br />
in the Five <strong>College</strong> Foreign Language Resource Center,<br />
102 Bartlett Hall, University <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts, by the center's<br />
director, Elizabeth H,D. Mazwcco. Direct all inquiries to<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mazzocco at 413/545-3453. Languages available at<br />
this time include Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean,<br />
Modern Greek, Norwegian, Serbo-Croatian, Swahili, Turkish,<br />
and Urdu.<br />
JOINT FIVE COLLEGE FACULTY OFFERINGS<br />
The following course listing includes only those courses<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered by faculty appointed joinrly by the Five <strong>College</strong>s.<br />
<strong>Hampshire</strong> students may take any course at the other four<br />
institutions as long as they meet the registration requirements<br />
for that course. Students should consult the <strong>school</strong>s' respective<br />
catalogs, available at Central Records, for complete course<br />
listings.<br />
New Five <strong>College</strong> appointments will be made in 1997-<br />
98; two in Film Studies, one in International Relations.<br />
FILM STUDIES (Appointment to be announced)<br />
In the first semester, the Five <strong>College</strong> Appointees in Film<br />
Studies will <strong>of</strong>fer introductory courses at Amherst, Mount<br />
Holyoke, Smich, and the University, In the second semester,<br />
they will <strong>of</strong>fer second-level courses at each <strong>of</strong> these four<br />

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (Appointment to be<br />
announced)<br />
The new Five <strong>College</strong> Appointee in International<br />
