LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES<br />

Cenificate Advisor at <strong>Hampshire</strong> - Norman Holland.<br />

The Five <strong>College</strong> Cenificate in Ladn American Scudies<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers students the opporrunhy to show an area <strong>of</strong> specialization<br />

in Latin American studies in conjunction with or in<br />

addition to their majors. The program provides a disciplined<br />

course <strong>of</strong> study allowing students to draw on the rich resources<br />

<strong>of</strong> more than 50 Ladn Americanist faculty members in<br />

the Five <strong>College</strong> area and is designed to enhance their<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the complex region that comprises contemporary<br />

Latin America.<br />

The program requires eight COurses on Latin America and<br />

the Caribbean that include the following:<br />

1. A broadly based introductory course providing an<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> the <strong>social</strong> and political history <strong>of</strong> Latin America;<br />

2. One course in the humanities. including courses<br />

focusing on Latin American culture from the pre-Columbian<br />

period to the present (such as art. art history. dance. film.<br />

folklore, literature. music. religion, and theatre);<br />

3. One course in the <strong>social</strong> <strong>science</strong>s, including anthropology.<br />

economics. geography, political <strong>science</strong>, and sociology,<br />

that <strong>of</strong>fers substantial attention to Latin America andlor the<br />

Caribbean;<br />

4. An interdisciplinary seminar taught by two or more<br />

faculty members.<br />

Other requirements:<br />

1. Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Spanish or Portuguese through the level<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fourth semester <strong>of</strong> college language study. Students<br />

must take one <strong>of</strong> these languages to the intermediate level<br />

andlor demonstrate in an interview the ability to conduct a<br />

normal conversation and read and interpret a text.<br />

2. Students must receive a grade <strong>of</strong> B or better in every<br />

course that qualifies for the minimum certificate requirement.<br />

At least three <strong>of</strong> the eight courses must be taken either at<br />

another <strong>of</strong> the Five <strong>College</strong>s or be taught by a faculty member<br />

not <strong>of</strong> the student's own institution. The certificate advisor on<br />

each campus is the director <strong>of</strong> the Latin American studies<br />

program at that campus or another individual designated by<br />

that body.<br />

The Five <strong>College</strong> Program in Peace and World Security<br />

Studies (PAWSS) was launched in 1984 by a group <strong>of</strong> Five<br />

<strong>College</strong> faculty and adminis[rators who perceived a need for<br />

expanded curriculum development and cross-campus coordination<br />

in the study <strong>of</strong> peace and conflict resolution. Originally<br />

funded in part by a three-year grant from The Ford<br />

S6<br />

Foundation, PAWSS is a multidisciplinary program that seeks<br />

to enrich the discussion <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> war and peace throughout<br />

the academic community. By encouraging the exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

these issues, PA WSS ultimately hopes to enhance the academic<br />

community's contribution to the search for peace and<br />

world and national security.<br />

In pursuit <strong>of</strong> these goals, PAWSS sponsors educational<br />

events open to the Five <strong>College</strong> community throughout the<br />

academic year. These include public lectures, films, panel<br />

discussions, and debates. In addition, PAWSS organizes<br />

annual winter and summer workshops for faculty [0 study and<br />

exchange ideas on critical political and curricular issues.<br />

In addition to the <strong>Hampshire</strong> faculty who teach courses<br />

related to peace and world security issues, nearly 100 Five<br />

<strong>College</strong> faculty in history, political <strong>science</strong>, international<br />

relations. and many other disciplines <strong>of</strong>fer courses in this<br />

field.
