That someone is you! Whether you're a<br />

student who has never made anything in their life to<br />

someone who would like to further explore the<br />

possibilities <strong>of</strong> design, this class is for you!<br />

In this Lemelson Program sponsored course<br />

students will have a unique opportunity to create or<br />

modify a recreational product by changing how it<br />

works or how it looks. Participants will be<br />

encouraged to explore their creative side by learning<br />

to work with fabrics, metal and plastics. Working in<br />

the fabrication shop students will learn design and<br />

fabricating skills that they can apply to their course<br />

projects.<br />

New Faculty Blographys<br />

Laurie Alberts, (IIA) visiting assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

writing. graduated from <strong>Hampshire</strong> <strong>College</strong> and =ived her<br />

MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop. She is the author <strong>of</strong><br />

two novels. Tempting f·ate and The Price <strong>of</strong> Land in Shelby,<br />

and a story collection, Goodnight Silky Sullivan. She has<br />

taught at the University <strong>of</strong> New Mexico, :-iorwich University,<br />

and the Antioch New ["'gland Graduate School.<br />

Awam Amkpa, (HA) adjunct assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, is lUI<br />

assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> theatre arts at Mount Holyoke <strong>College</strong>.<br />

lie received his BA from the University <strong>of</strong> Ifc, Nigeria;<br />

Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria; PhD, University <strong>of</strong><br />

Bristol, England.<br />

Joseph Hernandez Cruz, (CCS) assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

philosophy and cognitive <strong>science</strong>, holds a B.A. in<br />

philosophy from Williams <strong>College</strong> and will =ive the<br />

Ph.D. in philosophy and cognitive <strong>science</strong> from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Ariwna. His philosophical areas <strong>of</strong><br />

spccializatiml arc epistemology ,philosophy <strong>of</strong> mind, and<br />

philosophy <strong>of</strong> psychology. In cognitive <strong>science</strong>, his<br />

research is primarily in neural network modeling and in<br />

cognitive development. religion departments, and has worked<br />

in thc Infant Cognition Lab. Joe's current work attempts to<br />

naturalize epistemology by developing novel links between<br />

traditional philosophical approaches to knowledge and<br />

contemporary cognitive <strong>science</strong>. Other projects in progress<br />

include investigating folk psychology and mental state<br />

attribntion, distilling the psychological commitments found<br />

in early modern philosophy (especially Berkeley's theory <strong>of</strong><br />

vision), and studying the relationship between feminist and<br />

rutalytic epistemology.<br />

John Fabel, (HA) visiting lecturer <strong>of</strong> Design, received his<br />

BS and MS from the University <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts at Amherst.<br />

He has worked as a project consultrult for the Lemelson<br />

National Progranl and as a designer for area businesses.<br />

The class will explore currently available<br />

recreational equipment and the recreational market<br />

through field study. Students who elect to continue<br />

working on their projects after completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course will have that opportunity available to them.<br />

This course would be instrumental for students<br />

wanting to develop a Division I exam project.<br />

Thomas Hno, (HA) Lemelson visiting assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> design, received his B.F.A. from Pratt Institute and his<br />

M.EA. in sculpture from the University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. He<br />

has taught at Mount Holyoke <strong>College</strong>, Amherst <strong>College</strong>, the<br />

George Walter Smith Art Museum. llis work has been shown<br />

regionally.<br />

Delilah Montoya, (HA) visiting assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

photography, received her BA, MA, and MI' A from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> New Mexico. She has tanght at the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Arts and Letters, California State University, Los Angeles, the<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> American Indian Art and the University <strong>of</strong> New<br />

Mexico. Her work has been shown nationally and<br />

internationally and is in the collections <strong>of</strong> several major<br />

museums.<br />

Tom MUIT8Y, (CCS) Lemelson \'isiting assistant<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> computer <strong>science</strong> and instrnctional theory,<br />

received a B.S. in physics from Worcester Polytechnic<br />

Institute. an M,S. ill computer <strong>science</strong> and a doctorate in<br />

education/instructional technology from the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Massachusetts. Tom has worked as a research scientist in<br />

the area <strong>of</strong> artificially intelligent computer tutors, has<br />

worked in industry developing multimedia-based training<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware, and has been an adjunct pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Massachusetts teaching in the area <strong>of</strong> computer-based<br />

learning and instructional design theory.<br />

Bethany Ogdon, (CCS) visiting assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

media studies, =ived her BA. in political <strong>science</strong> and her<br />

M.A. in English and American literature from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> California, San Diego. She is currently<br />

completing her Ph.D. in visnal and cultural studies at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Rochester. She has taught at the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Glasgow, the University <strong>of</strong> Rochester and Hobart &<br />

Willirun Smith <strong>College</strong>s. Her published work includes<br />

essays on contemporary forms <strong>of</strong> televisuality and<br />

psychoanalytic theory, ideology and identity in the hardboiled<br />

detective novel, and Nicholas Nixon's "People with<br />

AIDS· photography. She is currently working on the<br />

relationship between the reality television phenomenon and<br />

issues <strong>of</strong> national identity, democracy and the public sphere<br />

in late twentieth-century U.S. culture.
