ACADEMIC FACILITIES<br />

THE HAROLD F. JOHNSON LIBRARY CENTER houses the<br />

college's print and media collections as well as a computer<br />

laboratory, television production facilides, a student lounge. a<br />

bookstore. a post <strong>of</strong>fice. an art gallery. the Career Options<br />

Resource Center. and the incernational smdies <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

The library's basic collection <strong>of</strong> 111,000 volumes<br />

SUppOf[S <strong>Hampshire</strong> courses and general student interests.<br />

Students also have ready access to more than 4,000,000<br />

volumes in the Five <strong>College</strong> consortium. The Five <strong>College</strong>s<br />

employ a consortium-wide computerized catalog system that<br />

lists the holdings at all Five <strong>College</strong> libraries. This system<br />

enables students at any <strong>of</strong> the colleges to locate a book or<br />

periodical simply by consulting a computer terminal at the<br />

library <strong>of</strong> their home institution. The library also provides<br />

access to a number <strong>of</strong> bibliographic and other databases for<br />

student use.<br />

<strong>Hampshire</strong>'s reference collection, periodical reading area,<br />

study room, micr<strong>of</strong>ilm reading room, video viewing facilities,<br />

and preview rooms serve the needs <strong>of</strong> students who wish to<br />

study in the library. Members <strong>of</strong> the reference staff provide<br />

scudents with instruction in library use in classes and for<br />

individual research projects.<br />

Students and faculty alike have access to <strong>Hampshire</strong>'s<br />

extensive video production facilities through the library's<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> media services. The media services staff provides<br />

equipment and technical instrucdon in color video production,<br />

both portable and studio formats. The closed-circuit<br />

video distribution system, INTRAN (Information Transfer<br />

Center), allows original television programming anywhere on<br />

campus to be fed into the library system and distributed to all<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> the campus, including student apartments and<br />

dormitory lounges. The media services <strong>of</strong>fice also maintains a<br />

growing collection <strong>of</strong> documentary and curriculum-related<br />

films and videos as well as films jointly owned by the Five<br />

<strong>College</strong>s.<br />

Computing resources at <strong>Hampshire</strong> include several file<br />

servers along with microcomputer clusters. These are fully<br />

networked and support access to campus, Five <strong>College</strong>s, and<br />

worldwide information resources, including the Internet and<br />

the World Wide Web. The microcomputer facilities on the<br />

third floor <strong>of</strong> the library center include Macintosh and MS­<br />

DOS/Windows machines, and staff are available to teach the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> popular s<strong>of</strong>tware for word processing, spreadsheets.<br />

publicarions. and statistics. Computers may be purchased<br />

through the college at substantial savings.<br />

THE CHARLES W. COLE SCIENCE CENTER houses<br />

classrooms and laboratories for the School <strong>of</strong> Natural Science,<br />

as well as the main college administrative <strong>of</strong>fices. The two<br />

floors <strong>of</strong> laboratories used for teaching and research are open<br />

to encourage students to interact with other students and<br />

faculty. These lab areas are used for interdisciplinary studies<br />

including microbiology, geology, environmental <strong>science</strong>s.<br />

ecology. entomology, physiology, organic chemistry, analytical<br />

chemistry, inorganic chemistry. biochemistry. cell hiology.<br />

plant biology, and physics. In addition, there is a Macintosh<br />

computer classroom with 15 PowerMac computers and a PC<br />

computer classroom with 10 Pentium-based computers,<br />

Science students at <strong>Hampshire</strong> <strong>College</strong> have the unique<br />

opportunity <strong>of</strong> combining the benefits <strong>of</strong> a small liberal arts<br />

institution with unusually well-equipped laboratory faciHties<br />

which provide state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art scientific equipment, Instrumentation<br />

used for chemistry-related research includes a<br />

nuclear magnetic resonance spectrophotometer (NMR), an<br />

inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), an<br />

atomic absorption spectrophotometer, a Fourier transform<br />

infra-red spectrophotometer (FTIR), a gas chromatographmass<br />

spectrometer (GC-MS). two diode array UV-visible<br />

spectrophotometers, a high performance liquid chromatograph<br />

(HPLC), and sample preparation equipment.<br />

Equipment for human health, microbiology, and<br />

immunology-related research includes a gamma spectrometer,<br />

an electromyograph, ultracentrifuges. a gel analysis and<br />

documentation system, and, a polymerase chain reaction<br />

(peR) machine.<br />

Other specialized facilities include an optics laboratory,<br />

research microscopes, a geology preparation room, an<br />

osteology laboratory, an animal room, and a research darkroom.<br />

The Natural Science Reading Room has a collection <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific books and periodicals on microbiology, genetics,<br />

chemistry, the environment. women in <strong>science</strong>, energy, and<br />

general <strong>science</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Hampshire</strong> <strong>College</strong> Bioshelter, a two-story, 2.600square-foot<br />

integrated greenhouse and aquaculture facility<br />

located on the south side <strong>of</strong> the Cole Science Center, serves as<br />

a center for fish and plant aquaculture and energy research,<br />

All <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hampshire</strong>'s scientific facilities are open to students 16<br />

hours a day.<br />

FRANKLIN PATTERSON HALL, named in honor <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Hampshire</strong>'s first president and one <strong>of</strong> its founders, contains<br />

three large lecture halls. several seminar rooms. faculty <strong>of</strong>fices,<br />

and a faculty lounge. The administrative <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Social Science ate also located in Franklin Patterson Hall.<br />

EMILY DICKINSON HALL contains the Performing Arts<br />

Center. which includes a "black box" theater capable <strong>of</strong> great<br />

flexibility in seating, lighting, and stage design; a smaller<br />

performing space used mainly for acting and directing classes<br />

and for smaller-scale productions; sound and lighting booths;<br />

and areas for set construction and costume-making. Seminar<br />

rooms, an environmental design studio, and the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Humanities and Arts are also located here,
