<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> <strong>Infantry</strong> <strong>Battalion</strong> <strong>Manual</strong><br />
will clearly outline <strong>the</strong> “Mission Essential Tasks” that are to be executed by <strong>the</strong><br />
battalion in a designated AOR, subject to <strong>the</strong> applicable ROE. The following<br />
sixteen tasks have been identified as peacekeeping related tasks from which<br />
mission-specific essential tasks could be drawn out for a particular mission<br />
based on its particular mandate and operational environment. The detailed<br />
task descriptions including <strong>the</strong> purpose, planning considerations, modalities<br />
of execution, organizational and logistics support aspects for each task in a<br />
peacekeeping context are described in Vol. II of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>.<br />
5.3.1 : Primary Tasks. Primary tasks are <strong>the</strong> basic tasks which form part<br />
of routine infantry battalion tasks to maintain visibility, observation and<br />
monitoring of activities, conduct of robust mobile and control operations,<br />
support protection of civilians activities and CIMIC activities, etc. These are:<br />
• Patrolling.<br />
• Observation Post.<br />
• Check Point.<br />
• Outreach and Engagement.<br />
• Situational Awareness.<br />
• Cordon and Search.<br />
• Convoy and Escort.<br />
• Operation Base.<br />
5.3.2 : Support Tasks. The support tasks require specialised organizational<br />
and resource augmentation in support of <strong>the</strong> larger peacekeeping effort in<br />
a mission area. These are:<br />
• Disarmament and Demobilization.<br />
• Critical Infrastructure and Assets Protection.<br />
• Crowd Management.<br />
• Detention.<br />
5.3.3 : O<strong>the</strong>r Tasks. These are tasks that are specific to a particular operational<br />
situation for which an <strong>Infantry</strong> <strong>Battalion</strong> need to be trained and prepared,<br />
and include:<br />
• Buffer Zone.<br />
• Joint Operations.<br />
• Reinforce/Relief.<br />
• Extract/Evacuate.
