combinati<strong>on</strong> of various data the shipping disasters in the<br />

Zuiderzee regi<strong>on</strong> can be dated within a period of 25 years or<br />

less. Sometimes an exact date of sinking can even be given13.<br />

Th e st<strong>on</strong>eware found <strong>on</strong> the ship of Barentz <strong>and</strong> Van Heemskerck<br />

has also been described. Th e ship was wrecked in October<br />

1596 <strong>on</strong> the north-east coast of Novaya Zemlya during the<br />

famous third Dutch voyage of discovery to reach Asia through<br />

the North. Th e crew built the Behouden Huys (the Safe House)<br />

<strong>and</strong> made use of the galley utensils of the ship during their<br />
