2.17 Clinker-built fisherman Nz44, so-called<br />

watership<br />

-Found <strong>on</strong> lot Nz 44 in Southern Flevol<strong>and</strong>, north of the village<br />

of Spakenburg, excavated in 1979 46.<br />

-Stock-number: ZN 44/20.<br />

-St<strong>on</strong>eware: <strong>on</strong>ly a small st<strong>on</strong>eware jug from Raeren was found,<br />

this with an interesting repair using red material in a crack in<br />

the bottom (fi g. 17).<br />

-C<strong>on</strong>text of the pottery: found between the ballast of erratic<br />

boulders.<br />

-Dating evidence: Th e type of sintel provides a building date in<br />

the fi rst half of the 16th century. Th e soil disturbance, repairs<br />

<strong>and</strong> the quality of the wood used to build the ship, two silver<br />

coins of Brabant, Charles V, minted in Antwerp respectively<br />

between 1507-1520 <strong>and</strong> 1520-1555, <strong>and</strong> the st<strong>on</strong>eware jug <strong>and</strong><br />

other ceramics provide a wreck date in the sec<strong>on</strong>d or third<br />

quarter of the 16th century.<br />

-Comment: Th e inventory also c<strong>on</strong>tains a copper kettle <strong>and</strong><br />

(sherds of ) several redware cooking pots <strong>and</strong> frying pans.<br />

2.18 & 2.19 Two clinker-built fisherman Nz74-I<br />

<strong>and</strong> Nz74-II, so-called waterships,<br />

which were probably scrapped <strong>on</strong> the<br />

same date<br />

-Found <strong>on</strong> lot Nz 74 (I <strong>and</strong> II), in Southern Flevol<strong>and</strong>, north of<br />

the village of Spakenburg, excavated in 1982 47.<br />

-Stock-numbers: NZ 74 I-58, Nz 74 II-1 <strong>and</strong> Nz 74 II-2.<br />

-St<strong>on</strong>eware: a complete jug with a volume of 2.5 litres was<br />

found <strong>on</strong> the Nz74-I <strong>and</strong> sherds of two comparable jugs <strong>on</strong> the<br />

Nz74-II (fi g. 18).<br />

-C<strong>on</strong>text of the pottery: between the ballast of erratic boulders.<br />

-Dating evidence: the type of sintel provides a building date of<br />

both the ships in the fi rst half of the 16th century. Th ere is a<br />

dendrochr<strong>on</strong>ological fell-date for the Nz74-I of 1525-1526 AD<br />

<strong>and</strong> of the Nz74-II of 1525-1527 AD. Th e ceramics indicate a<br />

wreck date in the middle or the third quarter of the 16th century.<br />

-Comment: both wrecks carried (sherds of ) several redware<br />

cooking pots, frying pans <strong>and</strong> plates.<br />

2.20 Clinker-built fisherman K84, so-called<br />

watership<br />

-Found <strong>on</strong> lot K 84 in Eastern Flevol<strong>and</strong>, near the town of<br />

Dr<strong>on</strong>ten, excavated in 197148.<br />

-Stock-numbers: K 84 II-25 <strong>and</strong> -71.<br />

-St<strong>on</strong>eware: a glazed jug with a volume of c. 1 litre <strong>and</strong> the base<br />

of a small (funnel neck?) Siegburg jug were found (fi g. 19).<br />

-C<strong>on</strong>text of the pottery: inside the wreck. Th e glazed jug was<br />

the <strong>on</strong>ly st<strong>on</strong>eware in use. Th e Siegburg sherd was found under<br />

the ballast of erratic boulders <strong>and</strong> probably part of a jug which<br />

was broken l<strong>on</strong>g before the ship sank.<br />

-Dating evidence: a coin of the dioceses of Utrecht, Frederik<br />

van Baden, was minted in 1514. Dendrochr<strong>on</strong>ological analysis<br />

provides a fell-date between 1511 <strong>and</strong> 1517 AD. Based <strong>on</strong> the<br />

pottery, the wreck dates back from the sec<strong>on</strong>d or third quarter<br />

of the 16th century.<br />

-Comment: for cooking <strong>and</strong> frying the ship carried some<br />

redware tripods <strong>and</strong> a small tripod pan with a h<strong>and</strong>le, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

copper kettle.<br />
