Manure
handling
Feeding Bigger farms produce own fodder
and purchase feed concentrates
from modern local feed mills
Technology,
Slaughtering
(location, live
weight …)
Bigger farms have tractors and
agr.equipment
Meat Sector Study
No manure removal systems in
place; manure is used as fertilizer
on the fields and slurry just runs into
the nearby river; does not respect
environmental standards
On small farms cattle graze in the
neighbourhood of the farm (and
along the streets), little use of self
grown maize and wheat; very little
feed concentrates
Also bigger farms have to purchase
partly fodder from the market as
farms are often too small to produce
enough forage
Small farms are still doing
everything by hand - feeding,
removing the manure, milking etc.
a) on the farm by the farmer, b) by
the butcher on the farm or in small
butcher shops, c) in
slaughterhouses - transport of
animals does not fit standards
Live weight of slaughtered calves is
often too low and therefore low
profitability; reasons are demand for
very young animals (of all kinds)
and the unavailability of cheap
fodder
Meat classification and quality
payments do not exist and farm
output differs extremely in weight,
age and breed
Farmer
Education Educational background is limited
as almost no vocational schools
which would be needed to train
small holders.
