impairments, blockages, low<br />

gamete production for the most<br />

part, which reduces rather than<br />

eliminates fertility) - was<br />

devastating at the time. Nothing<br />

could have prepared me for the<br />

shock on discovery that I<br />

couldn't conceive without this highly invasive treatment. A<br />

working professional life was turned upside down by a roller<br />

coaster of drugs and surgery, my eyes pinned open to this new<br />

world in which women submit their bodies for a breathtaking,<br />

sometimes heartbreaking, and frequently spectacular process of<br />

pro-creation. My own process was intensified by my agreeing to<br />

participate in a major six part TV documentary series Making<br />

Babies (BBC 1996), which was being made in the Hammersmith<br />

Hospital where I was a patient of the now media-famous Lord<br />

Robert Winston.<br />

3 The documentary that was eventually broadcast betrayed<br />

the reason I had wished to collaborate with the serious and<br />

committed producer. The project turned our lives in soaps and<br />

edited out anything I had spoken about in interview with<br />

regard to the economics or sexual politics of the infertile<br />

experience. The viewing ratings were, due to the series'<br />
