Anne Karpf has argued that your play Kindertransport marks a<br />
turning point in dealing with Jewishness in Britain: "Until<br />
very recently, the second generation of both survivors and<br />
refugees has followed in the footsteps of the first -<br />
deferential, mute, acutely sensitive to the British culture of<br />
embarassment [...], so perhaps it's not surprising that the<br />
psychosocial effects of the Holocaust only really came into<br />
public view with Diane Samuels's recent Kindertransport" (245).1<br />
Do you think that the success of Kindertransport was connected<br />
with a growing readiness within British society in the 1990s<br />
to consider the traumatisation of the second generation of the<br />
Holocaust victims?<br />

I think that it probably starts with the Kinder, the readiness<br />
of the Kinder themselves to acknowledge their histories. And I<br />
think it follows from there. The father of a friend of mine<br />
was on the Kindertransport, which is how I heard about it. And<br />
I heard about it around the time of the fifty-year-reunion in<br />
1989. The organisation was set up by this woman Bertha<br />
Leverton in this country to bring everyone together and have a<br />
celebration. And this organisation hadn't really existed<br />
before that, it arose out of this anniversary. So the Kinder<br />
