La mejor forma de definir a Providencia es por lo que no tiene. En esta isla de 17 kilómetros cuadrados no hay resorts, ni grandes cadenas hoteleras, ni spas, ni casinos, ni discotecas, ni centros comerciales, ni restaurantes de lujo. Hay, en cambio, posadas isleñas atendidas por raizales y pequeños hoteles y cabañas turísticas en donde predominan hamacas extendidas por lo general con vista a un mar de siete colores. Predominan el sosiego y el silencio. También playas cristalinas y una gran barrera de coral de 33 kilómetros, la 56 tercera más importante del mundo después de las de Australia y Belice y la segunda más larga en América Latina. Es en este pedazo de Colombia en donde se dice “no” al modelo de desarrollo turístico global, para mantener la ecología, el modo y la calidad de vida de sus pobladores. Por eso las leyes municipales de Providencia impiden a ciudadanos no nativos de la isla instalarse allí para emprender algún tipo de negocio. También está prohibido construir grandes hoteles o edificios de más de dos pisos. Esa es la razón por la cual al recorrer Providencia no se observa una sola construcción moderna, sino que casi todas sus casas son edificaciones de madera con dos pisos, elevadas sobre pilotes y pintadas con vivos colores. Hay un supermercado, un cajero automático, algunos negocios y no mucho más. Aunque el idioma oficial es el español, la mayoría de isleños habla creole, mezcla de inglés isabelino, español y lenguas africanas. Aquí los ritmos musicales no son la salsa y el vallenato sino el calypso, el mento y el reggae. Y gracias a que el origen de la isla es coralino y no volcánico, tiene arenas tan perfectamente blancas que reflejan casi todos los rayos del sol que chocan con ellas, permitiendo caminar descalzo y sin quemarse los pies. Claro que para ir a la playa, basta con caminar unos metros. Una de las más visitadas es Aguadulce; acá están los pocos hoteles instalados hasta ahora y una pequeña playa de aguas turquesa en donde habitan peces de colores que a veces rozan las piernas de los bañistas. Pero la playa más hermosa es Sudoeste (Southwest Bay), apenas una franja de arena que se escapa de la densa vegetación tropical en donde los parasoles hacen las veces de palmeras. Aquí se saborean algunos de los mejores manjares de la isla. En el restaurante El Divino Niño por ejemplo, con capacidad para 70 comensales, se sirven enormes bandejas con cangrejos, camarones, Puente de los Enamorados langostinos y pescado frito, todo acompañado de arroz con coco, plátano y yuca. La playa de Manzanillo es la segunda más importante de Providencia. Acá se sirven platos de pescado frito con arroz, plátanos y cangrejo. Otros sitios para visitar Es ejercicio obligado darle la vuelta a la isla por tierra, lo que brinda la oportunidad al turista de admirar, además de playas, lugares emblemáticos como el Puente de los Enamorados. Este puente colgante hecho en madera y de unos 100 metros de largo, une a Providencia con la isla Santa Catalina, y fue construido en los años 80.
Vista a las colinas de Providencia desde la fortaleza de Warwick en Santa Catalina 57
