3. Rough growth fronts of evaporated
polycrystalline films
Keywords: scaling, columnar structures, mounds
The scaling of interface width and the coarsening of
evaporated gold thin films with thicknesses from 30 to
1800 nm have been obtained from 2 dimensional measurements
on STM images. The coarsening of mounds,
which appears on the surface of the films, increases
with a constant scaling exponent. The interface width
grows in two stages of which the last one starts at 50
nm and corresponds to a time scaling exponent of 1/3
with a constant slope morphology. Scaling exponents
are compared with those from models for high thickness
epitaxial growth and for polycrystalline film
growth, all them predicting a constant slope morphology.
Local slope analysis of mound profiles agrees with
a columnar growth. This result is confirmed by SEM
images of the thickest films, that show a structure in
qualitative agreement with a competitive growth columnar
model. The comparison with the up-to-date single
crystalline growth models indicates that a more complete
description of the atomic surface diffusion phenomena
have to be included for a better columnar
growth simulation.
4. Growth of rare-earth silicides
epitaxially grown on Si(111)
Keywords: silicides, surface atomic structure, STM
Rare earth silicides epitaxially grown on Si substrates
show very interesting properties from the technological
point of view: they present a very low Schottky barrier
height on n-type silicon, the lattice mismatch between
the silicide and the silicon (111) plane is also small and
they are highly inert. The atomic structure of the layer
consists of an alternative sequence of Si and RE planes.
The Si-Si distance in these planes is similar to the distance
of neighbouring atoms in an ideal Si(111) crystal.
One Si atom out of 6 is missing leading to a stoichiometry
of RESi 1.7 . However, the detailed atomic surface
structure of this material is object of controversy. By
means of photoemission, LEED and STM experimental
techniques in ultra high vacuum conditions we are
studying the relationship of the surface atomic with the
electronic structure of the Y and Gd silicide films.
Moreover we are working on an experimental procedure
for improving the flatness and continuity of the
films.
