correspondiente a Pb or Sn depositado sobre Ge(111),
19. Phase transitions in metallic
interfaces: Charge density wave or
dynamical effects?
Keywords: phase transition; charge density wave;
metallic interface
Critical phenomena are a fascinating area of current
research in solid state physics. The complex phenomenology
of phase transitions can be analyzed in the more
simple playground of low-dimensional systems.
Recently, it has been reported a temperature-driven
phase transition for a Pb or Sn layer deposited on
Ge(111) due to a Charge Density wave mechanism. This
scenario has been recently questioned by LURE- Madrid
group. First, the experimental Fermi surface of the
interface (see figure below) exhibits no significant nesting,
a crucial point in the CDW model. Second, valence-band
photoemission results do not support that
electron correlation plays a major role. Based on the
last data set measured at the SU8 beamline at Super-
Aco using photoemission and photoelectron diffraction,
we can conclude that the origin of this reversible
temperature transition is not a CDW. Both phases have
a strong rippling of the Sn (Pb) layer ( 0.4 Å) with two
Sn (or Pb) adatoms inequivalent. At room temperature
the overlayer atoms are fluctuating between these two
sites and at low temperature this fluctuation is frozen
20. Un nuevo método para el estudio del
proceso de hidruración en vainas de
combustible nuclear
20. A new method to study the hydrating
processes at inner surfaces of nuclear
fuel claddings
Keywords: mass spectrometry, electrical resistance,
Zircaloy
We have developed a method , based in Ultra High
vacuum techniques to study the hydrating of Zircaloy
claddings from their inner surfaces. The cladding tube
is heated in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber while
Hydrogen flows inside the tube. The external H 2 partial
pressure, the tube electrical resistance and the power
dissipated by the reaction are measured throughout the
process. Those measurements at different hydrating
stages are complemented with optical micrographs to
reach a complete understanding of the main physical
processes. Therefore the hydrating process can be
stopped at predefined stages .A description of the
hydrating first stages is obtained. The method allows
the measurement of the incubation and failure times
and the total energy dissipated by the hydrating reaction.
