21. Thin film use in the metal-ceramic joining technology Keywords: ceramic-metal joining, ceramic-ceramic joining, functional graded materials This project deals with the formation of dissimilar ceramic/metal interfaces, their microstructural characterisation and the evaluation of main properties. Following bonds are studied: Si3N4/stainless-steal, Ni-based superalloys and YSZ/stainless-steal, Ni-based superalloys, using interlayers of gradual composition (FGM) to diminish residual stresses arising from differences in CTE. FGM will be processed by magnetron sputtering techniques. Besides these joints using FGM, brazing alloys type Cu-Ti and al so Ni-Cr will be used to joint metal and ceramics. Parallel to the formation of joints, processing ceramic coatings (Si3N4, YSZ) on metal substrates using magnetron sputtering will be investigated. All the metal/ceramic interfaces are characterised using microscopic techniques, such as SEM, TEM, EPMA and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Strength values, hardness and thermal difussivity of the above interfaces will be determined. Residual stresses developed will be analysed using non-destructive techniques like X-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering. Comparisons between both results and validation with finite element modelling will be also performed. Forseen applications of the results of this project comprise several fields, in particular, components in engines and turbines, sensors, solid oxide fuels cells, coatings to decrease wear and corrosion, and thermal barriers coatings. 1.
