3. Nanoestructuras magnéticas de red
compleja
Palabras clave: anisotropía magnética, nanoestructuras
laminadas, redes complejas
Estudiamos las nuevas propiedades físicas de nanoestructuras
magnéticas compuestas por materiales de red
cristalina compleja, basándonos en cálculos de primeros
principios dentro del método SKKR (Korringa- Kohn-
Rostoker apantallado).
bidimensional compleja. Esta complejidad puede tener
origen químico (heteroestructuras químicas ordenadas)
o magnético (acoplamientos antiferro- y ferri-magnéticos,
o magnetismo no colineal). Entre la gran diversidad
de nanoestructuras con estas características, nos
centramos en aquellas formadas por materiales magnéticos
con potencial para el desarrollo tecnológico: sensores
de campo magnético, aplicaciones magneto-ópticas,
magnetorresistencias, etc.
orden).
3. Magnetic nanostructures of complex
lattices
Keywords: magnetic anisotropy, layered nanostructures,
complex lattices
We study the new physical properties of magnetic
nanostructures formed by materials of complex crystal
lattice by means of the ab-initio SKKR (screened-
Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker) method. This method, based
on the density functional theory, obtains the Green
function of systems with lack of periodicity in one
dimension. Layered structures are investigated where
at least one of the components has a complex bidimensional
unit cell. The origin of this complexity can
be either chemical (chemically ordered heterostructures)
or magnetic (antiferro- and ferri-magnetic couplings,
or noncollinear magnetism). Among the large
diversity of nanostructures of this kind, we focus on
those formed by magnetic materials showing an important
technological potential for the development of
magnetic field sensors, magneto-optical devices, or
magnetoresistors. Special emphasis is devoted to the
determination of the magnetic anisotropy energy and
its dependence upon structural modifications (segregation
and ordering).
4. Numerical simulations of magnetic
materials
Keywords: micromagnetics, thermal stability, magnetic
recording media
The study of correlations between the microstructure
and magnetic properties requires the use of numerical
simulations. The calculations allow to predict qualitatively
the optimal behavior of a magnetic material for the
purpose of different applications such as magnetic
recording, sensors or MEMS. The work is centred in the
study of coercivity and remanence of high anisotropy
nanostructured materials such as SmCo or FePt. The
fundamental properties include the reversal modes and
the role of magnetic interactions. Other important problem
which determines the usage of magnetic materials
is the calculation of magnetic stability versus thermal
fluctuations. The necessity to search for alternative
media for magnetic recording requires the usage of
new computational methods which take into account
the complexity of the magnetic media with interactions.
At present time we are working on the development of
such methods which include the determination of multidimensional
energy barriers and Monte Carlo
methods. At the same time we work at more realistic
models capable to predict thermal stability of magnetic
media for long timescale and in a realistic way. The
magnetic media under investigation are the high anisotropy
media such as SmCo, FePt and perpendicular
recording media. The study also includes the role of
interactions in magnetic viscosity of small magnetic
particles such as Co, FePt and CoPt.
