Jorge Martínez Duarte llegó a la
ciudad hace 30 años y nunca
más pudo alejarse de ella. Tras
conocer sus habitantes, su
historia y su patrimonio terminó
convirtiéndose en uno de esos
porteños que, tal como dicen los
versos de Gonzalo Rojas, cree
firmemente que no basta con
amar Valparaíso, también hay que
merecerlo.
Como Director de las sedes que
el Instituto Profesional DuocUC
tiene en la región, ha apostado
por proyectos emblemáticos que
no sólo recuperan el patrimonio
material sino que también buscan
rescatar lo que él define como
“alma porteña”: ese espíritu de la
ciudad que no se encuentra en
ningún otro rincón del mundo. Él
mismo lo descubrió cuando
conoció la ciudad “como se
debe: caminando y conversando
con la gente”, encontrándose así
con el orgullo que los porteños
sienten por su pasado y también
con su disposición para evitar
que ese esplendor se quede atrás.
Lo comprobó más tarde con
exitosas iniciativas de DuocUC,
porque esta institución no sólo
ha preparado técnicos y
profesionales por más de dos
décadas en la región, acogiendo
hoy más de 17 mil alumnos en
carreras vinculadas con
Comunicación, Diseño,
Administración, Ingeniería,
Recursos Naturales, Salud y
Turismo. También ha contribuido
al desarrollo de Valparaíso con
un sinnúmero de proyectos,
entre ellos el programa Pinta
Valparaíso y la restauración de
objetos patrimoniales como el
Cristo de la Iglesia La Matriz. Pero
la más emblemática es la
recuperación del Edificio
Cousiño, que además de cumplir
un rol académico hoy está
abierto a la ciudadanía a través
de un auditorio, un salón de
eventos, una cafetería y una
oficina de información turística.

17,000 students in courses
related to Communication,
Design, Management,
Engineering, Natural Resources,
Health, and Tourism. He has also
contributed to the development
of Valparaiso with countless
projects, including the Valparaiso
Paint Program and the restoration
of heritage sites such as the
Christ of the Church La Matriz.
However, the most emblematic is
the restoration of the Cousiño
building. In addition it fulfills an
academic role that is open to the
public through an auditorium, a
meeting room, a café, and a
tourist information office.
