Un símbolo de la hermandad chileno-británica
The British Arc: A symbol of the Chilean-British brotherhood
Diseñado por el arquitecto chileno francés Alfredo Azancot Levi, el
Arco Británico es sin duda uno de los monumentos emblemáticos del
centro de Valparaíso. Ubicado en la Avenida Brasil, específicamente
entre las calles Huito y Eleuterio Ramírez, fue donado por la colonia
británica en 1910, siendo inaugurado al año siguiente, durante los
festejos del primer centenario de la independencia de Chile, por el
presidente Ramón Barros Luco.
Completamente recubierto de mármol blanco, este monumento de 10
metros de alto, 13 metros de ancho y 4 metros de fondo, luce en su
parte superior la figura del tradicional león británico de estilo
victoriano. Fabricado completamente en bronce, se emplaza en un
arco de hormigón de cuatro columnas y que en cada uno de sus
costados porta medallones en fierro fundido con las figuras de
Thomas Cochrane, Bernardo O'Higgins, Robert Simpson y Jorge
O'Brien, las que son acompañadas con los escudos de ambos países.
Desafortunadamente el tiempo no ha pasado desapercibido para este
céntrico monumento, presentando además en su entorno diversos
cambios, sobre todo, en lo que se refiere al diseño del espacio que lo
rodea, y que se ha traducido también en el corte de numerosos
árboles plantados en la avenida que lo alberga. Paralelamente a estas
transformaciones, el Arco Británico ha sido sometido a diversas
restauraciones que buscan mantener su estructura y atractivo inicial.
Designed by the French Chilean architect Alfredo Azancot Levi, the
British Arc is undoubtedly one of the most iconic landmarks of
downtown Valparaiso. Located on Avenida Brasil, between the streets
of Huito and Eleuterio Ramirez, the British Arc was donated by the
British in 1910; it was then inaugurated the following year by President
Ramón Barros Luco during the celebrations of the centenary of the
independence of Chile.
Fully lined in white marble, this Victorian style monument is 10 meters
high, 13 meters wide and 4 meters deep, and at its top, it displays the
traditional British lion which is made entirely of bronze. It is placed on
an arch of reinforced concrete with four columns on each of its sides.
Each one has a cast iron medallion displaying the figures of Thomas
Cochrane, Bernardo O'Higgins, Robert Simpson and George O'Brien,
which are accompanied with the shields of both countries.
Unfortunately, time has not passed by unnoticed for this principal
monument. Various changes have taken place in its environment,
especially, in regard to the design of its surrounding space. Specifically,
the cutting down of many of the trees that were planted on the avenue
which houses it. However, at the same time, the British Arc has
undergone several restorations in trying to maintain its structure and
initial appeal.
