Jardines de la Merced
The Gardens of La Merced
101
Also known as the Colon (Columbus) Gardens, they were
always known for their proximity to the old convent of the
friars of La Merced. The area was one of the natural exits
from the city towards the north. The gardens are decorated
with a fountain in the middle, dating from the late 19th
century, surrounded by beds of roses, bushes and a wide
range of species of trees.
Jardines de Agricultura
Agriculture Gardens 103
The gardens got their name from the allotments which
covered this area when the Town Council bought the site in
1866, and in the 1930s, benches and dovecotes were added.
It is known nowadays as Jardín de los Patos (Garden of the
Ducks), due to the large number of ducks in the pond. From
the wide variety of species of trees growing in the park, the
rarest is a fine specimen of ginkgo (a species which has
survived from the Mesozoic era). The park contains several
monuments, such as the ones in honour of Julio Romero de
Torres or the composer Martínez Rucker.
Jardines de la Victoria
Victoria Gardens 104
These gardens form part of the Paseo de la Victoria, a wide
avenue which took its name from the convent which stood
there until the 19th century. The northern part is dedicated
to the Duke of Rivas, the Cordoban writer and politician.
