Yolanda Kakabadse
Yolanda Kakabadse es una mujer que ha entregado
la mayor parte de su vida a la conservación
de la naturaleza y a la protección del
medioambiente, y lo ha hecho de manera estupenda
e incansable: en 1979 fue cofundadora
de la Fundación Natura, en 1993 fundó
la Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano, ha sido
ministra del Ambiente y presidenta de la IUCN y
la WWF. En medio de sus muchas ocupaciones,
nos atiende gustosa, se muestra complacida
de saber que en Galápagos se esté fomentando
el tema de la sostenibilidad, especialmente
con proyectos como el de Educación para la
Sostenibilidad auspiciado por “Galapagos
Conservancy”, y nos felicita porque el objetivo
de nuestra revista sea justamente el promover
la sostenibilidad.
Yolanda, en Galápagos, al igual que en todo el
mundo, sigue surgiendo mucha preocupación
ya no solo por la conservación sino, sobre
todo, por la sostenibilidad, ¿qué nos recomiendas
para poder asegurarla de mejor manera?
Seguir llevando a cabo programas, así sean
pequeños; que nazcan de las empresas, de los
colegios, de la estación Darwin, de cualquier
institución. Todo esfuerzo es válido. Es de suma
importancia seguir trabajando en despertar la
conciencia ambiental, puesto que nos lleva a
entender profundamente cuán importante es el
cuidado del ambiente, y el efecto que esto tiene.
Proteger la naturaleza es proteger al ser humano.
En Galápagos se ha trabajado mucho
en eso, ¿qué aspecto necesitamos reforzar?
Seguir trabajando con los niños hasta que se
forme en ellos una cultura de amor y respeto

Yolanda Kakabadse is a woman who has
dedicated most of her life to the conservation
of nature and the protection of the environment,
and has done so in a spectacular
and untiring manner. In 1979, she became
the co-founder of the Fundación Natura (Natura
Foundation). In 1993, she founded the
Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (Latin
American Future Foundation). She has held
relevant positions such as Minister of the Environment
in Ecuador, President of the International
Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN), and President of the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF). In the middle of all her activities,
she graciously recieved us and demonstrated
her pleasure in knowing that sustainability is
being encouraged in Galapagos, especially
with projects like the Education for Sustainability,
sponsored by “Galapagos Conservancy”.
She also congratulated us because the main
objective of our magazine is specifically to promote
Sustainability.
Yolanda, in Galápagos, as in the rest of the
world, worries not only about conservation
but, above all sustainability, are surging. What
can you recommend to us to ensureit in the
best way?
Continue using programs, even if they are small;
whether they begin in businesses, schools, the
Darwin station, or any other institute. Every effort
is valid. It is of the utmost importance to
continue working on waking the environmental
conscience, since that is what help us to
deeply understand how important caring for
the environment is and the effect that it has. To
protect nature is to protect mankind.
