Cuando empecé colección olorVISUAL, hace ahora cuarenta años, pensaba
en la pintura y la escultura. Buscaba en estas expresiones artísticas
lo que las conectaba con mi trabajo de perfumista: ir modificando
poco a poco las materias para conseguir el resultado final, el cuadro o
la escultura y, en mi caso, la esencia que previamente había escrito en
la fórmula.
A medida que pasaban los años e iba aprendiendo de los artistas, de
los galeristas y otros coleccionistas –a pesar de que posiblemente mi
forma de construir esta colección sea muy diferente– descubrí la fotografía
y me di cuenta de que esta también despertaba mi memoria
olfativa.
Así como para mí la pintura abstracta –tal vez no tanto la figurativa– es
la que activa mis recuerdos olfativos, para la fotografía necesito que
esta diga algo más de lo que podemos ver, es decir, que esté intervenida
o manipulada, ya sea en su proceso de preparación o bien después,
mediante diferentes sistemas.
Es para mí fundamental, desde los inicios, la intención de educar el
sentido del olfato a través del arte. A veces me dicen que la fotografía,
al ser más visual, ayuda a lograrlo. No lo sé, pero si es así, estoy muy
contento de poder presentar esta exposición del fondo fotográfico de
colección olorVISUAL en el Centre d’Art Tecla Sala. Es un proyecto largamente
esperado, por lo que me hace mucha ilusión llevarlo a cabo
ahora, cuando se cumplen los cuarenta años de la colección.
Huelan las propuestas que les hago: notas frutales para Yasumasa Morimura;
Ellen Kooi, de tierra mojada; para la obra de Eulàlia Valldosera,
una nota de tabaco; o de naftalina para la fotografía de Jesús Etxarte
y Evru, entre otras. Espero que les guste a qué me huele el Centre
d’Art Tecla Sala... y suéltense, huelan, disfruten de una forma diferente
y más plena la exposición Elèctric i llunyà. Fotografia contemporània

When I began colección olorVISUAL, forty years ago now, I was
thinking about painting and sculpture. I was looking in these forms of
artistic expression for what connected them to my work as a perfumer:
the gradual transformation of the materials to achieve the final result
– the painting or the sculpture and, in my case, the essence that I had
previously written as a formula.
As the years went by and I went on learning from artists, gallerists and
other collectors – for all that my way of putting this collection together
is perhaps very different – I discovered photography and I realized that
it too stirred my olfactory memory.
In so far as for me it is abstract painting – figurative painting probably
not so much – that activates my olfactory memories, with a photograph
I need it to say something more than what we can see: in other words,
that it has been intervened in or manipulated, whether in the process
of its preparation or subsequently, by means of different systems.
From the very beginning, the intention to educate the sense of smell
through art has been fundamental for me. Sometimes people tell me
that photography, being more visual, helps to achieve that. I am not
sure, but if that is the case, I am very happy to be able to present this
exhibition of the colección olorVISUAL photographic collection at the
Centre d’Art Tecla Sala. This is a long-awaited project, so I am especially
pleased to bring it to fruition now, in the year of the collection’s
fortieth anniversary.
The proposals we put forward here smell: fruity notes for Yasumasa
Morimura; for Ellen Kooi, wet earth; for the work by Eulàlia Valldosera,
a note of tobacco; or naphthalene for the photography of Jesus Etxarte
and Evru, among others. I hope you like what the Centre d’Art Tecla
Sala smells of… and let yourself go, smell, and enjoy in a different and
fuller way the exhibition Electric and Distant. colección olorVISUAL Contemporary
