invited Yusa on his tour in South America.
In Argentina, Yusa learned the extent of
Latin American music beyond the canción
protesta taught in Communist Cuba. She
also realized she had already established
an audience. When getting ready for a solo
show, Yusa saw more than 200 people in
the venue and thought, “This venue must
do very well.” To her surprise, the audience
sang her tunes and requested songs they
knew from her collaboration with Lenine.
“Argentina was a life-changing
experience,” said Yusa. She settled in the
Gaucho country for almost a decade. From
there, she traveled all over Latin America
and got a chance to learn the diverse folk
rhythms from every region. She connected
to her Latin culture, fell in love, and as her
life went on, personal struggles got in the
way of her life and career. It was time to
move on, leave Argentina, and put her music
on hold. So while searching for her inner
peace, Yusa became a therapist and moved
to Florida to work in her new field. Music
became a side gig, and Yusa performed
in Miami sometimes. The CubaNOLA Arts
Collective knew Yusa’s trajectory, and when
they heard she was in Miami, they invited
her to perform with the Jazz and Heritage
Foundation at Preservation Hall. Yusa
enjoyed her brief visit to New Orleans.
The pandemic forced Yusa to find new
horizons. She accepted help from a good
friend in New Orleans and decided to settle
in the city of jazz. It did not take long for
Yusa to find a new sense of belonging, a rich
musical community, and make new friends.
Music became her primary focus again, and
she has been busy performing at various
festivals, venues, and events.
Yusa’s performances are designed
not to be heard but to be felt. She takes
the audience on her musical journey and
shows her jazzy spirit. She feeds from the
energy of her audience and gives them
an unforgettable time while celebrating
together “ the luck of being alive.”

La música de
Yusa
Cada vez que Yusa actúa, lleva al
público en una viaje a través de
su música, y sus conciertos no son
para escuchar sino para sentir.
Su talento es innegable, ya que ha
estado perfeccionando su oficio durante
mucho tiempo, tomando melodías de
varios géneros e infundiendo en su música
los sonidos de cada lugar al que ha
viajado.
Describir la música de Yusa es
difícil. No puedes categorizarla dentro
de un género; a ella le gusta así. Es
multiinstrumentista; canta, improvisa y
hasta se baja del escenario a bailar con la
audiencia. Ella nunca quiere ser encasillada
porque su música trata de sentimientos y
experiencias.
Yusa ingresó al conservatorio en Cuba
a los 9 años. De pequeña se enamoró
de la guitarra cuando vio a los hijos de
su cuidadora practicar sus lecciones. Su
madre vio cómo la música encendía un
fuego en su interior y reconoció que era
más que una breve ilusión. Ahorró dinero
y le consiguió a Yusa su primera guitarra,
ofreciéndole el apoyo que deseaba
que le hubiera dado su propia
madre cuando alguna vez soñó con
ser cantante.
Gracias al apoyo de su
madre, Yusa pudo obtener una
exigente educación musical en el
conservatorio de Cuba. Estudió
guitarra clásica y se convirtió en la
primera en graduarse con estudios
de tres, un instrumento de cuerda
originario de la isla caribeña. El tres
fue la vía de Yusa para explorar
la música cubana del campo y se
convirtió en su forma de desafiar
la formación tradicional del
Conservatorio, ayudando a dar a
la música folclórica cubana el lugar
que se merecía en la academia.
Poco después de graduarse, se unió
a Son Los Que Son, una popular banda
femenina que necesitaba una tresera.
Tocar con ellas le permitió tocar y cantar en
las tarimas de los lugares más famosos de
Cuba. Con su trabajo podría llenar la cuota
de 28 presentaciones al mes requeridas
para ganar el salario como músico en
Cuba. Ella con dedicación y esfuerzo
también se ganó el privilegio de ir a giras
internacionales.
Colaborando con amigos que
necesitaban música para sus obras de
teatro, Yusa encontró la necesidad de
escribir y componer. Este evento marcó el
nacimiento de la carrera solista de Yusa.
Hizo una gira por Europa y Japón y obtuvo
nominaciones y una invitación de la BBC
