SUMMARY
The maritime cluster is a functional entity
comprised of many different industries and
businesses. It includes e.g. navigation fi elds,
maritime industries and port operations in
the private and public sectors. The sea plays
the unifying role for all of these businesses
and operations. The maritime cluster businesses
and industries are particularly signifi
cant to the provinces of Varsinais-Suomi
and Satakunta in south-western Finland.
The shipbuilding industry, shipping and port
operations form the core of the maritime
cluster. Around these are a large number of
subcontractors, suppliers, partners, associated
businesses, various professional and
academic training and research facilities,
public administration, unions and associations.
The combination of all of these contributors
forms a solid maritime cluster.
The maritime cluster includes e.g. shipyards,
ship equipment manufacturers, marine
suppliers, ship design offi ces and off-shore
industries, shipping companies handling
both passenger and goods traffi c, ship supply
and clearance companies, classifi cation societies,
ports, companies specialising in port
technology, port operators and other service
providers related to sea transport. Examples
of signifi cant associated businesses include
fi nancing and insurance companies.
The entire maritime cluster is particularly
well represented in the region of southwestern
Finland, where we fi nd companies
representing all of the business areas
within the cluster. The maritime cluster
holds great relative signifi cance for the
regional economy and industries in the
south-western region of Finland; only the
maritime cluster in the Åland islands has
greater import. In the provinces of Varsinais-
Suomi and Satakunta, the maritime cluster
includes approximately 400 companies with
a total of almost 500 operational sites and
offi ces in the region. In the maritime cluster
survey, the ports were classifi ed as companies
regardless of their legal organisation.
In 2005, the combined turnover of the
maritime cluster companies in Varsinais-
Suomi and Satakunta totalled approximately
4 billion euro. Of this amount, about 2.4
billion euro came directly from the maritime
sector, which signifi es any company activities
related to navigation, maritime industries
and port operations. The direct economic
impact and multiplier effects of the maritime
cluster extend in a signifi cant fashion to the
economy of the entire region.
In the provinces of Varsinais-Suomi and Satakunta,
the maritime cluster provides work
for approximately 17,000 persons, of which
11,000 are directly employed in the maritime
