Peatlands and peat Resources of Juuka, Eastern Finland, Part 3. Geologian
tutkimuskeskus, Turvetutkimusraportti 426, Geological Survey of Finland,
Report of Peat Investigation 426, 105 pages, 49 figures and 2 appendices.
The Geological Survey of Finland studied 46 peatlands (total 3 744 ha) in
Juuka municipality in 2002–2004. Elevation, site type, peat type and its decomposition
degree, snag content and subsoil type were determined and recorded
in the field. A total of 1781 samples were analysed for water and ash
content. A part of those were analysed for dry bulk density, net calorific value
and sulphur content.
The most common peatland types are pine bogs (43 %), open fens (11 %),
drained peatland forest types (34 %), cultivated peat soils (2 %) and spruce
mires (10 %). The proportion of undrained peatlands is 12 %. The distribution
of Sphagnum dominated peat is 34 % and Carex dominated peat is 66 %. The
mean degree of peat humification (H1-10) is 5.4. The mean depth of studied
peatlands is 1.3 m and the total storage of peat approximately 50.0 million m 3
in situ. The studied area deeper than 1.5 m covers 1 340 hectares and contains
about 32.1 million m 3 of peat. The average ash content of peat is 4.3 % of dry
weight, the dry bulk density 91 kg/m 3 , effective calorific value of dry peat 21.1
MJ/kg and the sulphur concentration 0.42 % of dry weight.
Altogether, 42 mires covering 1 206 hectares are evaluated to be suitable
for fuel peat production. This is about 32 % of the studied total peatland
area. The available amount of energy peat is about 22.1 million m 3 in situ. The
energy content is 10.6 MWh at 50% moisture content. Three (3) peatlands are
found suitable for horticultural peat production. The area and peat quantity of
these areas is 297 hectares and 0.67 million m 3 .
