SMCQ PAYS HOMMAGE TO ANA SOKOLOVIC<br />
Composer Ana Sokolovic (1968- ) will be celebrated<br />
during the third edition of the SMCQ’s<br />
Hommage Series in 2011-12. The Series pays tribute<br />
to one Quebec composer each year through a<br />
series of concerts, outreach initiatives, and awareness<br />
programs. Sokolovic follows Gilles Tremblay<br />
and Claude Viver and will be the first woman and<br />
first non-native Quebecer to be fêted. Originally<br />
born in Belgrade, Serbia, Sokolovic moved to<br />
Montreal to <strong>complet</strong>e her master’s at the<br />
Université de Montréal and married composer<br />
Jean Lesage. Sokolovic won the CBC National<br />
Young Composer’s Competition and has also won<br />
awards at the SOCAN Young Composer’s<br />
Competition. In 1996, she represented Quebec at<br />
the Unesco International Rostrum of Composers.<br />
One of Sokolovic’s recent commisions is from The<br />
Banff Centre and CBC for the 2010 Banff<br />
International String Quartet Competition. CC<br />
COMPOSER DENIS GOUGEON<br />
WINS INTERNATIONAL CONTEST<br />
Denis Gougeon has won the $25,000 first prize at<br />
the International Composition Contest at<br />
Shanghai during the world exposition 2010.<br />
Second and third prizes go to Krystof Maratka of<br />
France and Simon Steen-Anersen of Denmark.<br />

Each contestant composed a six-minute piece<br />
featuring traditional Chinese instruments for the<br />
full orchestra. The contest was organized by<br />
Radio France and the Shanghai Media Group.<br />
Eight Quebec musicians were assisted by the<br />
SMCQ to compete in Shanghai.<br />

November 14 performance in Winnipeg will be<br />
broadcast on CBC radio. In the past, Chan has also<br />
won the Eastman International Competition, the<br />
Bosendorfer competition and the Canadian Music<br />
Competition, and has performed solo and chamber<br />
recitals across Canada.<br />
