HAMILTON
» July 15 – 25
Hamilton saw its
first Fringe in June
of 2003. The festival
had to be cancelled
in 2005 due to lack
of funding, but
bounced back in
2006 and has grown
» HEFNER
ever since. In 2009, Hamilton scheduled its Fringe
Festival to immediately follow Toronto’s.
Piggybacking on the energy and momentum of
the much larger festival, they received a massive
increase in artist applications and experienced
their best attendance yet. Look out for The Hefner
Monologues, written and performed by John
Hefner, Hugh Hefner’s estranged cousin. A true
story of his struggle to answer the question:
“How can you make a name for yourself… when
someone else already has?”
WINNIPEG
minuit... À surveiller dans la programmation
théâtrale 2010 : 7 (x1) Samurai, déjà sacré
meilleur solo dans quelques festivals fringe :
l’Américain David Gaines y recrée à lui seul
l’épique film de Kurosawa Les Sept
Samouraïs... Et dans Archy and Mehitabel,
l’Ontarien Jeff Culbert propose une vision
humoristique de l’humanité à travers les yeux
d’une coquerelle et d’un chat !
REGINA
» July 2 – 6
Regina’s Fringe Festival was established in 2005
and is now celebrating its sixth year. Interesting
shows this year include Rooms // Apart by
»
7 (X1) SAMURAI
!mPULSE Theatre. It tells the heartfelt story of a
patient newly diagnosed with schizophrenia, who
is admitted into a mental hospital. Among the
many voices rattling around his head, there comes
another voice that pierces through his isolation
from the other side of the wall. Also check out
Love and Hate in the Postmodern Age, by Bio-Punk
Productions, which uses poetry, dance, music and
ROOMS// APART
a film noir-style narrative to examine the human
spirit and its ability to triumph over adversity.
SASKATOON
» July 29 – August 7 / 29 juillet au 7 août
In 1989, the 25 th Street Theatre House Players,
Saskatoon’s first professional theatre company,
expanded its theatre programming into the summer.
A year after that first step, the theatre’s
artistic director, Tom Bentley, established the first
Saskatoon Fringe Festival and attracted over
6,000 patrons. Saskatoon will also host its first
Kids Fringe this year. Much anticipated is
Shakespeare Extra-Light: What you Will, by the
Saskatoon Shadow Players. It’s Shakespeare with
a twist in this clever and abbreviated rendering
of Twelfth Night.
EDMONTON
» August 12 – 22
In 1982, Brian Paisley, the artistic director of
Chinook Theatre, was inspired by the Fringe in
Edinburgh to create a similar festival in Edmonton.
It was the first of its kind in North America and has
since become the second largest Fringe Festival in
the world. In 1992, with the same pioneering spirit,
LOVE + HATE IN THE POSTMODERN AGE
TJ DAWE: LUCKY 9
a number of artists introduced the concept of
BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) to the Fringe and
the idea spread like wild fire to the rest of Canada.
Highlights for this year’s Fringe include Gordon’s
Big Head: New World Hors d’Œuvres, by Rapid Fire
Theatre. An audience member randomly selects a
play in the Fringe program and, based on a twosentence
description, the actors improvise the
entire play. Also look out for Lucky 9, by Fringe circuit
veteran TJ Dawe. Lucky 9 is an autobiographical
monologue about how he used the HBO show The
Wire, books by doctor Gabor Maté and a personality
test called the Enneagram to develop as a person
and reconnect with his family.
CALGARY
» July 30 – August 7
Calgary-born Blair Gallant was struck by the
sense of kinship, understanding and community
identity he experienced at the Edmonton Fringe
Festival, and it inspired him to create the first
Calgary Fringe in 2006. The festival is now a full
nine days long. Highlights include Don’t Make
Fun of Jesus, a one-woman show by Break the
Wall Productions, which shows us one girl’s
struggle to come out of a cult, a marriage, poverty
and the closet. Almost A Love Story, by Casino
Productions tells the story of a university student
who discovers his deceased father had an affair
with a man. He confronts his father’s lover to
learn more about who his father really was.
VANCOUVER
» September 8 – 19
Joanna Maratta had never heard of ‘Fringe’ when
the application for the Edmonton Fringe arrived
25 years ago. The application sparked the idea
that Vancouver should host its own festival in
order to make theatre more accessible to the
general public. Now, Vancouver Fringe Festival is
the second oldest in Canada and the most international
Fringe Festival in North America. An
exciting show in the mix is My Dinner With
Jacques, by One Crazy Frenchman Productions.
Jacques Lalonde is a long-time fringer, having
been in every Vancouver Fringe since 1987. This
play consists of dinner in his actual apartment.
VICTORIA
» August 26 – September 5
The Victoria Fringe Festival is entering its 24 th
year. However, unique to Victoria is its Unofest,
running from May 20 th to the 30 th . Entering its
13 th year, the Unofest distinguishes itself from
regular Fringe Festivals by being strictly for oneperson
shows. ■
