D’accord, c’est dans le cadre d’une importante<br />

exposition rétrospective consacrée au photographe<br />

Rankin que Ranked paraît. D’accord, la publication<br />

est à mi-chemin du catalogue d’exposition<br />

et du magazine ; d’accord, ce n’est probablement<br />

pas un caprice du type « je veux un magazine »,<br />

puisque Rankin est aussi fondateur de Dazed &<br />

Confused. Alors, quoi ? Ranked, c’est 112 pages à<br />

la gloire de Rankin et ça frise la mégalomanie,<br />

même si personne ne niera son style, son intuition<br />

et la variété de ses images. Mais on a l’impression<br />

qu’un switch s’est produit : avant, les magazines<br />

de style parlaient de ceux qui les réalisaient (DA,<br />

photographes, éditeurs…), mais prenaient pour<br />

cela le prétexte de la mode, de la musique, de l’art.<br />

Aujourd’hui, c’est d’emblée qu’on balance : « je<br />

vous parle de moi ». Et même si le personnage peut<br />

être passionnant, la démarche manque d’élégance,<br />

de pudeur et peut-être d’intérêt, car on apprend<br />

plus des gens qui nous parlent du monde que<br />

d’eux-mêmes. A travers Dazed & Confused, on a<br />

vu un style, pas un personnage – de plus. Alors,<br />

certes, de nombreux textes de Ranked transpirent<br />

l’ambiance d’un shooting, le face à face Rankin/<br />

David Bailey (le maître) est intéressant et vivant,<br />

et on objectera que le vrai contenu est ici celui des<br />

images. Reste que si vous connaissez l’inventeur<br />

du concept qui succédera au personal branding, je<br />

veux bien l’interviewer.<br />

David Bailey & Rankin in Conversation<br />

Rankin: So obviously I’m a massive fan. This is<br />

weird, I feel like that TV presenter-what’s his<br />

name?<br />

Bailey: Paxman? [Laughing]<br />

R: Or Parkinson.<br />

B: Oh God, he’s the worst.<br />

R: Have you seen on any of those shows?<br />

B: Nah.<br />

R: You’ve been on Chris Evan’s show haven’t you?<br />

TA?<br />

B: Yeah, but that’s because I did a film for his<br />

company, a model film. I only do interviews if<br />

I’m selling something normally —otherwise you<br />

become rent-a-voice.<br />

R: But when you first started to become famous,<br />

or infamous, you must been doing a certain<br />

amount of self-promotion.<br />

B: The truth is I didn’t really care.<br />

R: Right, they all just loved you.<br />

B: No! Not at all! Not all of them [Laughs]. People<br />

don’t want to write about somebody whose<br />

hobby is fishing or gardening or…<br />

R: Or bird-watching.<br />

B: I like bird-watching. I could have been a, what<br />

are they called? A twitcher. I love anoraks. I think<br />

anoraks are the best people in a way because<br />

they are passionate about what they do. I mean,<br />

you’re a sort of anorak —you’re a photographic<br />

one aren’t you?<br />

R: Yeah.<br />

B: I’m a photographic anorak. And I love people<br />

who build model planes, model trains, they seem<br />

to be the last people left with any passion. I’m<br />

all for anoraks.<br />

Favorite Photographers<br />

R: Or bird-watching.<br />

R: If you had to pick your favorite photographer<br />

of all time…<br />

B: Well, that’s an impossible question, like which<br />

painter or which composer. Current ones? Or<br />

dead ones? Dead ones because they’re less<br />

competition.<br />

R: [Laughs] Funny. There are so many young<br />

photographers, some who were inspired by you.<br />

Are you aware of the young photographers now?<br />

Are you a photo-fanatic?<br />

B: I don’t know all of them —there’s a Rankin,<br />

and a few others.<br />
