D’accord, c’est dans le cadre d’une importante
exposition rétrospective consacrée au photographe
Rankin que Ranked paraît. D’accord, la publication
est à mi-chemin du catalogue d’exposition
et du magazine ; d’accord, ce n’est probablement
pas un caprice du type « je veux un magazine »,
puisque Rankin est aussi fondateur de Dazed &
Confused. Alors, quoi ? Ranked, c’est 112 pages à
la gloire de Rankin et ça frise la mégalomanie,
même si personne ne niera son style, son intuition
et la variété de ses images. Mais on a l’impression
qu’un switch s’est produit : avant, les magazines
de style parlaient de ceux qui les réalisaient (DA,
photographes, éditeurs…), mais prenaient pour
cela le prétexte de la mode, de la musique, de l’art.
Aujourd’hui, c’est d’emblée qu’on balance : « je
vous parle de moi ». Et même si le personnage peut
être passionnant, la démarche manque d’élégance,
de pudeur et peut-être d’intérêt, car on apprend
plus des gens qui nous parlent du monde que
d’eux-mêmes. A travers Dazed & Confused, on a
vu un style, pas un personnage – de plus. Alors,
certes, de nombreux textes de Ranked transpirent
l’ambiance d’un shooting, le face à face Rankin/
David Bailey (le maître) est intéressant et vivant,
et on objectera que le vrai contenu est ici celui des
images. Reste que si vous connaissez l’inventeur
du concept qui succédera au personal branding, je
veux bien l’interviewer.

David Bailey & Rankin in Conversation
Rankin: So obviously I’m a massive fan. This is
weird, I feel like that TV presenter-what’s his
name?
Bailey: Paxman? [Laughing]
R: Or Parkinson.
B: Oh God, he’s the worst.
R: Have you seen on any of those shows?
B: Nah.
R: You’ve been on Chris Evan’s show haven’t you?
TA?
B: Yeah, but that’s because I did a film for his
company, a model film. I only do interviews if
I’m selling something normally —otherwise you
become rent-a-voice.
R: But when you first started to become famous,
or infamous, you must been doing a certain
amount of self-promotion.
B: The truth is I didn’t really care.
R: Right, they all just loved you.
B: No! Not at all! Not all of them [Laughs]. People
don’t want to write about somebody whose
hobby is fishing or gardening or…
R: Or bird-watching.
B: I like bird-watching. I could have been a, what
are they called? A twitcher. I love anoraks. I think
anoraks are the best people in a way because
they are passionate about what they do. I mean,
you’re a sort of anorak —you’re a photographic
one aren’t you?
R: Yeah.
B: I’m a photographic anorak. And I love people
who build model planes, model trains, they seem
to be the last people left with any passion. I’m
all for anoraks.
Favorite Photographers
R: Or bird-watching.
R: If you had to pick your favorite photographer
of all time…
B: Well, that’s an impossible question, like which
painter or which composer. Current ones? Or
dead ones? Dead ones because they’re less
competition.
R: [Laughs] Funny. There are so many young
photographers, some who were inspired by you.
Are you aware of the young photographers now?
Are you a photo-fanatic?
B: I don’t know all of them —there’s a Rankin,
and a few others.
