Fernand Melgar pendant 4 semaines.
PHNOM PENH THROUGH THE LENS
OF CINEMA
— The Bophana center in Phnom Penh,
founded by Rithy Panh, is a masterpiece on
memory, social and cultural issues in Cambodia.
Swiss TV RTS, in collaboration with the Swiss
cooperation DDC, launched a filmmaking training
program 3 years ago.
— In november 2015, as an extension of this
project, the Grand Voyage initiated by the HEAD
– Genève asked students from Geneva and the
Bophana Centre to create films in direct hold with
the reality of the cambodian capital. Over 4 weeks,
the apprehension of the other in his irreducible
difference, beyond the picturesque, was one of the
ambitions of this Workshop, headed by Fernand
Melgar.
— 8 films were completed in Geneva this
winter with the Bophana students, thanks to the
collaboration with the FIFDH and the RTS. These
short films, true stories held by necessarily subjective
visions, will be presented here for the first time.
— Written between the 15th and 16th century,
the manuscripts of the Songhaï Empire are the
proof that the african continent does have a history.
Back then, Timbuktu was one of the principal
centers of teaching and cultural production on the
continent. Mali retains 900’000 manuscripts, most
of which were successfully protected from jihadi
attacks. This exhibit offers us the opportunity to
discover a long-ignored facet of world history.
