We learn that the old people in the Hutrel
have been evacuated south and we are glad
that Granddad has left this inferno. At 7am
we are woken by the cannon and whistling.
They must be targeting the village. There are
no planes to adjust the fire. A shell falls 300
metres from here. Another one explodes 10
metres from one of the people from the farm
who was milking the cows. Nobody is hurt.
The artillery also fires on the junction where
the Frigout family live. The weather is
overcast, not much flying.
The artillery fires several times, but few
rounds. The antiaircraft defence is weaker.
The allies are apparently claiming that they
are preparing a second invasion. Apparently
they are on the high ground overlooking St-
Lô. But is it true? Mr Sens is ill. We think he
has an upset stomach. Dad brings him some
‘laudanum’. The Frigout family tells us that
they are going to Lengronne where the local
authorities have retreated.
