At 4 o’clock in the morning, there is a constant
but faraway rumbling of navy cannons. At 5
o’clock, Dad tells us that they are probably the
preliminary landings. We don’t go to school.
Planes hover overhead, people are worried. In
the streets, there are posters forbidding
anyone to drive. In the afternoon, some bombs
are launched near the power plant and at the
railway station. The antiaircraft defence keeps
firing. Paulette, our maid, becomes hysterical.
At around 8pm, the first deadly bombardment
begins. We hurry to shelter against the walls.
The house shakes a lot. The St-Thomas
crossroads, Béchevel Street and Marne Street
are all hit. The Sens family take refuge at our
house, as does Paulette’s sister. There are 14
of us in total and we all sleep on mattresses in
the living room. Dad keeps watch.
A 4h du matin, roulement continu, mais
lointain des pièces de marine. A 5h, Papa nous
apprend que ce sont sans doute les
préliminaires du débarquement. Nous n’allons
pas à l‘école. Les avions rôdent, les esprits sont
inquiets.
Papa wacht.
