Nosy Ve
The azure blue sky, the
white sand, the beach
and its shells as well as
the turquoise water leave
the visitors speechless.
You have probably heard about "Nosy Be" but
never "Nosy Ve". If the first is called the island of
perfumes, the second is a "bird island".
5
kms off the coastal
village of Anakao
(south of Toliara)
is a small piece of
paradise called "Nosy
Ve". To do this, you
have to sail by canoe
or boat. If this place is also called
"bird island" it is because it is
home to a colony of endemic birds,
red-tailed phaetons or "straws in
tail". Nosy Ve would be the only
breeding site for this species.
Added to the quiet sound of
the waves are the songs of the
birds (herons, egrets, seagulls),
composing the relaxing music of
nature. The azure blue sky, the
white sand, the beach and its shells
as well as the turquoise water leave
the visitors speechless. The lagoon
is good for diving. Numerous
kitesurfing opportunities are also
available around Nosy Ve.
Historically, Nosy Ve would
have served as a refuge for pirates
and then for traders. It became
later the site of the first French
administration of the south-west
coast of Madagascar. A French
resident settled there in the 19th
century. Failing to live comfortably
there, those who once lived on the
island settled thereafter in Toliara.
Today Nosy Ve is left to
fishermen and tourists who can be
dropped off for a few hours on this
exceptional island.
