What is your definition of beauty?
GN: Beauty is something that makes me want to take out
my camera, which never happens, unless I’m travelling. So,
perhaps it’s just a state of mind.
A lot of artists in the theatre or in films say they have
no problem performing naked, but that “in the city”,
they are prudish. Is that the case for you, too?

de mon travail est un effet secondaire possible mais dont
j’estime qu’elle ne concerne que l’intimité du spectateur.
Quelle serait votre définition de la beauté ?
GN : La beauté, c’est quand j’ai envie de sortir mon appareil
photo, ce qui n’arrive jamais, sauf quand je pars en voyage.
C’est donc peut-être tout simplement un état d’esprit.
Beaucoup d’artistes au théâtre ou au cinéma
déclarent n’avoir aucun souci à se produire nus
mais « qu’à la ville » ils sont pudiques,
c’est également votre cas ?
GN : Absolument. Je ne retire aucun plaisir à l’idée d’être vu
nu. Et l’idée de me déshabiller devant un public me paraît
extrêmement gênante. Cependant, du moment où la photo
est prise, je me dissocie de l’être qui apparaît sur les images.

GN: Absolutely. I get no pleasure from the idea of being
seen naked. And the idea of taking my clothes off in front
of people is extremely uncomfortable for me. However, once
a photo is taken, I disassociate myself from the being who
appears in the pictures.
JYG: There are plenty of people in the city,
but do you ever come across other people when
you’re working outdoors?
GN: In Ireland, an old lady saw me on the edge of a cliff and
went running off, screaming with indignation. I was sorry
about that, because my aim isn’t to shock. I have come across
hikers when I’ve been travelling in Iceland, but the wild
character of the island means that it’s not a problem. I’ve
just got back from the Canaries, where the nudist culture
is very strong, so I had no problems there either.
JYG: The Canaries, are they the photos you have been
publishing recently?
GN: Yes, exactly. I took 18,000 photos there, and will release
117 pieces from them.
JYG: What is your next destination?
GN: I don’t know just yet; the world is my oyster… n
Il y a bien des gens en ville, vous arrive-t-il
d’en croiser dans la nature quand vous travaillez ?
GN : En Irlande, une grand-mère m’a vu au bord d’une falaise
et est partie en criant d’indignation. J’en suis désolé car
ma démarche n’est pas de provoquer. Lors d’un voyage en
Islande, il m’est arrivé de croiser des randonneurs mais le
caractère sauvage de l’île fait que ce n’est pas un problème.
Je reviens des Canaries où la culture naturiste est très forte,
donc pas de souci non plus.
Les Canaries, ce sont ces clichés que vous publiez
depuis quelque temps ?
GN : Exact, j’y ai réalisé 18 000 photos dont je sortirai 117
œuvres.
Quelle est votre prochaine destination ?
GN : À date je ne le sais pas encore, le monde est vaste… n
