Moins connues que les chutes Voltaire à Saint-Laurent du Maroni,
plus préservées que les cascades de Fourgassier à Roura, les chutes
de Tibourou ont tout pour plaire.
Situées sur le territoire de la commune de Regina, comme un
trésor, elles se dévoilent... à qui sait les chercher ! Car pour les
trouver, pas de carte ni de panneau. Juste une entrée, discrète, en
bordure de la RN2. En venant de Cayenne, juste après le point
kilométrique 74 (noté PK74 sur une borne), un chemin se devine
sur la droite.
Praticable en voiture en saison sèche (de juillet à novembre) il
permet de rejoindre un parking situé à 500 mètres. En saison des
pluies, et en fonction du véhicule utilisé, il est d’ailleurs préférable
de se garer en bordure de la RN2.
Après le parking, un carbet marque l'entrée du sentier. Attention :
il s’agit d’une installation privée. Pas question dans ce cas de s’y
installer sans autorisation.
Pour le promeneur, le layon a suivre part à droite du carbet. S’il
n’est pas balisé, il est tout de même facilement repérable.
C’est alors parti pour une vingtaine de minutes de marche en forêt,
le long d’un petit cours d’eau où il est possible de se rafraîchir de
temps à autre.
Sur ce petit kilomètre de plat, la promenade est agréable. Pour les
enfants, elle est ludique : traversées sur des troncs, ou passages en
dessous.
Au bout de quinze minutes le long de la rivière, le layon oblige à la
traverser. Ne restent alors que cinq petites minutes d’une pente
douce à monter pour arriver au-dessus des bassins, face à deux
petites cascades, plus ou moins imposantes en fonction de la
saison. Sur le côté, une corde attachée à des racines permet de
sécuriser l’ascension du rocher. Au sommet : un autre bassin offre
cette fois au baigneur un petit jacuzzi naturel avec une vue
imprenable. Un délice.
Not as well-known as the Voltaire falls in Saint-Laurent du
Maroni and more preserved than the Fourgassier falls in Roura,
the Tibourou falls will no doubt fill your heart with joy.
Located within Regina city territory, they are an unmatched
treasure to be unearthed… by those who know how to seek them
out! Because no map or poster signals their exact location. Just a
discrete entryway, right by road RN2. Coming from Cayenne,
right after milestone 74 (called PK74), a path emerges on the
right hand.
During the dry season, you may drive about 0.3 miles down that
path which will lead you to a parking area. During the rainy
season and depending on your vehicle, it is advised to park
alongside road RN2.
Past the parking area, a small hut indicates the beginning of the
track. Beware however: it is a private property and you cannot
stay there without authorisation.
Hikers must follow the path off the right of the hut. Although not
a marked trail, it is rather easy to identify.
From then on, a twenty-minute walk across the rainforest awaits
along a small stream where you might even want to freshen up,
from time to time.
For less than a mile on flat grounds, you will blissfully stroll
amongst trees and forest sounds. It is a fun one for children: from
crossing on to stepping underneath fallen tree trunks.
After fifteen minutes or so following the river, the time will come
to cross it. Then, another five minutes of walking up a gentle slope
will take you above the pools, facing two waterfalls the size of
which varies according to the season. On the side, a rope attached
to strong roots allows for a secure climb to the top of the rock.
Once you get to the top, you shall see another pool that swimmers
are bound to enjoy and use as small, natural whirlpool with a
breathtaking view. Delight in a nutshell.
• Pour y aller: au départ de Cayenne, en direction de Saint-Georges, passer le PK74. L’entrée est sur la droite.
Garer son véhicule en bord de route ou emprunter le chemin (500m) qui mène à un petit parking.
• Depuis le parking: longer le carbet, prendre le layon (non balisé) à droite. Marcher 15 minutes le long du cours d’eau,
le traverser puis monter durant 5 minutes.
• Il est recommandé de se munir de bottes, le parcours pouvant être boueux.
• Le site est propre, chacun est invité à emporter ses déchets afin qu’il le reste !
• To get there: departing from Cayenne towards Saint-Georges, drive past the PK74 milestone. Entrance is on the right.
Park your vehicle on the side of the road or drive down the path for 0.3 mi until you reach a small parking area.
• From the parking area: walk by the hut and go down the unmarked trail on the right. Follow the stream for 15 minutes,
cross it and walk up for 5 minutes.
• It is advised to wear boots since the trail is often very muddy.
• The site is clean so visitors are asked to take their trash back with them, in order to keep it that way!
